12 cubic yards of compost!

I've got 12 cubic yards of compost coming this afternoon or tomorrow! Ordered it from the local mushroom factory! Woo hoo! Now what am I going to do with all that compost? :)

I'll be right there with the truck!!!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH!...you DAWG! "What am I gonna do with all that compost?" Scream and holler!? Wallow in it and throw it up in the air like it was gold coins!? Camp out on it and guard it with your life!? Man, you're rich now!!! What a trophy!

The nearest mushroom site near me is South Carolina, too far to go to get it. I'm jealous! You better post pics, dave!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I wuz gonna say, you can load some up on a box car and send it down Texas way, Collinsville, that is.......

hey dave, I can see it in the store. 1 lb, 2 lbs! you'd be boxing up stuff all day!

Mason, MI

You lucky dog, you! ;-)
Your plants are going to love you, Dave!

Whoop whoop! The compost has arrived and boy did it. The dumptruck that pulled in my driveway was even bigger than I was expecting.

The drive was nice enough to go around my property and dump it here and there, rather than just all in one big pile. That'll save me a lot of work!

1 cubic yard covers 81 sqft at 4 inches deep.
12 cubic yards covers 972 sqft at 4 inches deep.

Main Garden: 10'x75' (750sqft)
Cherry Garden: 10'x20' (200sqft)
TOTAL: 950sqft)

This means that, once I spread it out, I will have a 4" layer of compost covering my entire garden (both gardens, actually). I'll let it sit like that for a while, then I'll till it in around February.

Zowie! WHat a haul! Congrats!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Gracious, but you have a lot of land.

We could go to the base (Maxwell AFB) and get a truck load of compost for free, but I don't need that much. :)

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

Dave
You are lucky to have a source like that close to you.
I'm envious of you.
Paul

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

am envious too. but sure glad you got it!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Wahhhhhh! I think I'm actually COVETING his 'shroom compost. Hey, Dave - you didn't get a tip on any mushroom growers here in mid-TN, did ya?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Daves that's the way to buy it. I have been buying it by the 80 pound bag and it isn't fun anymore lifting this stuff. You should see instant results next season. Enjoy!

Vols: Actually I did ask him, and he didn't know. He said he was just a delivery guy (he is an electrician most of the time) and he delivers for the factory (he gets a cut of the purchase amount in exchange).

He is only away of the factory in Loudon. I asked him if he'd deliver to Murfreesboro, and he grunted something that sounded half-snort and half-laugh.

Sorry!

But, lemme rub this in a bit more. They gave me cured compost! This stuff was from the back, and it's a year old! That means it doesn't stinky anymore. I spent about 2 hours today shoveling the stuff around and I'm not even close to 1/4 of the way done. Oooofta!

Dave - what exactly is mushroom compost made of?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Dave........YOU TELL 'EM!!!!!!!! eLAINE

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Up here it's horse manure.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sue, here's an explanation: http://eesc.orst.edu/agcomwebfile/garden/soil/mushroom.html

(I'm still pouting, Dave.)

Well if that isn't just the coolest thing ever! I'm so excited for you and I sure wish I had that for my garden. Wow!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Just checkin' here boss............any crumbs left??

Hehehe. Not hardly. I'm finished spreading all the mountains except for one (the biggest one, Mt. Compostest).

It's backbreaking work, but man is it nice to dig in that dark black compost.

Oh, my, what is this feeling I'm having? Why, I do believe it's common old garden variety envyitis, crossed with a severe case of Iwantsometoo syndrome. Heck, I would take the smelly new stuff. In this sun and on this porous limestone ridge, it would blend in before the first snow flies. What's snow?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Dave! I had to laugh when I read this because I was remembering when we ordered 10 yards of compost and the driver went ahead and filled his 14 yard truck and delivered it. He dumped it in a heap that we wheelbarrowed to the huge planters. We then planted everything in them in the straight compost since we had no top soil to mix in with it, Boy oh boy sid the plants wver like that stuff! If we hadn't had to move we would have had another truck load delivered this year! Sure beat trying to buy it by the bag!

Oakland, CA(Zone 9b)

A tip if you live in any state (like CA) where most communities have mandatory recycling: somewhere near you will be a regional 'greens waste' recycling center, where they compost all the greens waste collected by your local sanitary company. You can buy top-quality compost by the bag or cubic yard MUCH CHEAPER than your local garden store/home improvement center, and they generally deliver as well. My gardener got us 8 cubic yards over the last year, and the best quality stuff only costs $22/cubic yd.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

We don't have such a facility close to us here in Seward, but there is a company selling Alaskan compost. I've been a bit concerned about what might be added unwittingly during recycling... such as grass clippings that have been treated with Weed & Feed. This chemical attacks broadleaf plants. I don't even accept grass clippings from friends unless I know what they put on their lawns. That's not an option when composting the refuse of an entire community or city. Have you asked about this?

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Darn, I cant see the pictures - this is what showed up when I clicked the Hyperlinks - Sounds wonderful tho.!

I don't know what compost in other areas goes for but we got what seemed to be a fantastic bargin to me. 14 cubic yards delivered for $110.00. It was a combination of cow manure and greenwaste and was well composted. Someone else around here said it usually sells for much more but I didn't price around to find out.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I got 10 yards of mushroom compost delivered for $45. We have two mushroom growers near here that have to have this stuff hauled off immediately due to DEQ regulations. OR I can get yard compost from our landfill dump here for $10.50 a yard. They compost it for about a year and that way the chemicals don't seem to bother anything I have ever put it on.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Mushroom compost is supposed to be really good stuff. And that price is terrific. Your lucky to have a source so conveniently close.

Lyles, TN

Yeah, Dave, what Azaelea said. The first 3, I get the error message, the last one, nothing. Help! I have windows 2000. I want to see......
