propagating lilies from scales?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I posted this in bulbs, but I need help soon, so I thought I'd post this here too. I dug up some spring blooming lilies and accidently chopped one bulb off from its greenery. It also lost some scales. I heard that lilies can be grown from scales, though. Is this true? There were also a lot of bulblets. How long will it take to get a mature bulb that will bloom from the scales and the bulblets? How should I plant them?

Yes you can grow bulbs from the scales. The easiest way I've found is to put them in a baggie in damp peat/vermeculite, seal and keep in a warm place. Little bulbs form in a couple of weeks. You might want to dip in a fungicide first.

The bulb and bublets could bloom in a year to three years. I always read three years as the norm but I've had them bloom in 1. Little 1' stalks and a flower, LOL.

Try a google search and you'll probably get more info than you need :)

Thanks so much, both of you. I got right to work and planted my scales and some bulblets, too.

age, don't bother me any Barry :)! i alway feel, and will be forever be young in my thinking process. haven't aged a day old from my 17th birthday LOL!

back to the original subject though, i see lots of bulbils on the asiatic and oriental lilies i grow around here. most of the bulbs are at the maturing stage at the moment. keeping my fingers cross that this coming winter will be cold one. cold weather does wonders for the lilies i grow.

have a pleasant evening!!!
