I have (had) several of these over the last 4 years. I went to my postings to see when they bloomed last year and it was in July. Any one that has these I would like to know when they bloomed this year. I haven't had the first one to bloom.
surprise lily question
Jim, I had one bloom mid-August this year. But I'm probably not a good comparison because of our zone differences, and the fact that mine was REALLY a surprise - it was dug up this spring, and has been in a pot ever since. I wasn't expecting any of them to bloom this year, and possibly not even next year, until they're good and settled...
Thanks GV for the information. Bobbie said she asked her sister that lives in North Al. about hers and they didn't bloom either. I guess it has been to dry.
Ok, tell a cold climate girl what a "surprise lily" is, please. :)
Here's a link from last year. http://davesgarden.com/s/66312.html
Jim...I have about 15 and only 2 bloomed in july when they are supposed to...I think it has been too dry for them this year too!
Weezin...they grow from a bulb and grow green long leaves and when the leaves die a stalk comes up with 6-8 lily blooms...
You'll also see them referred to as "nekkid lady" bulbs - due to their lack of foliage when they bloom. (The phonetic spelling is due to numerous, unnamed southern afflictions :)
Mine aren't blooming yet..haven't seen any yet this year at all.
Jim I had one bunch of them bloom this month the others haven't done anything. I agree I think its because its been so hot and dry.
Well thanks everyone. I was planting a passalora the other day and accidently dug a bulb so I know they are still there.
Jim, I have a few of these also. I remember mine blooming more in September last year. Seems like everything else in my garden had pretty much done all it was going to do and I wasn't even making rounds like before. (normal rounds are 2 to 3 times a day while everything is in bloom) Then I just so happen to notice them. I wouldn't give up on them just yet, I am still looking for mine to bloom out this month.
I'll let you know when they do!
Thanks Molly, I haven't given up but was concerned. Lmk when they bloom.
Will do Jim!!
Your welcome!
My husband loves them because he likes the name Naked, a/k/a nekked Ladies. There is also a shorter, red variiety called Spider Lily because the pistals and stamens are so long and feathery. They have the same habit; the leaves come up first and then die down, and later, nearer to fall, the blooms come up on bare stems. I think the whole famiy is called Lycoris
I have had 3 bulbs bloom in last week, out of 50+, we need rain!! Might be why they are so late.
We are desperately in need of rain, too, and I'm thinking that's the reason our are lagging behind, too. Our crepe myrtles aren't blooming as profusely this year, either, for the same reason.
Mine were all blooming like crazy when I moved. In fact they are about the only thing that was still alive!
Mine bloomed a little early I thought. I believe they started in July or early August. I thought they usually bloomed late August, early September.
Yea!!! I just saw mine coming up!! So be on the lookout for your too Jim!! We are fairly close so maybe your's will be popping out soon too!! I knew I remembered mine coming up in late September! Can't wait for the blooms to open on mine, I will post a pic as soon as they do!
Mine re comeing up also. I had a friend that I took the first 4 that emerged and potted up for her. I wasn't sure if they would make it or not. Went by there yesterday and they were blooming and standing tall. So tehy will transplant after emerging. Just thought someone might like that info. Jim
