We're probably going to buy an 8HP chipper/shredder this fall. Do any of you have one? How about the Simplicity brand? That's what I'm really looking at right now. Any advice or opinions will be appreciated.
Chipper/shredders- opinions please.
I have a 6.5 hp MTD Yard Machine and have been very happy with it. It will digest anything up to 4" in diameter. Only thing it doesn't like is newspaper. But other than that, we've shredded or chipped everything from leaves, straw and brush to tree limbs.
If I had to be confined to just one piece of power equipment, this would be it.
I swear by mine (not in the nasty sense LOL). I agree with Brook, I wouldn't be without it. Mine's a german brand, can't remember offhand but i'll look tomorrow (1am here now)Don't know if it would be available in the US
I've got a yard machine too. We just got it last fall when we cut down a couple of trees. Shredded all branches under 3.5" diamter and had my own mulch :) Also shredded all the leaves in the yard last fall and incorporated into compost, was great. LOVE IT!
Wish I had one, but my neighbor does, so I drag my fallen branches and big stuff to her. Don't get one too samll - I bought a small one a few years back - it wouldn't take anything more that about 1" and was just too much trouble, still had the big stuff left over!
I have a 8 HP Sears mulcher/shredder and its great.
One suggestion is.. I wish I had gotten an electric start; 8HP has alot of compression and is kind of hard to pull start. Its really eats up the leaves.

I do not buy anything anymore without consulting Consumer's Reports. They have been totally accurate with all my purchases for many years. The reason you can trust them is because they don't accept advertising, so they don't have to watch out what they say, with the threat of losing revenues. If you don't get it, your library will have it, including their annual book, "Buyer's Guide" which reviews everything they have rated in the past year. They have very good indexing so you can look 2 or 3 years back, if need be.
