The Apple crop

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

What does the apple crop look like where you are? Here in upstate NY there is a likelihood of one of the poorest years ever. My neighbor and I "always" make cider from the apples of our own and a few neighbors trees but this year NADA due to the late May hard freeze.

Heavy apple crops here this year, even the young Russett we have is overloaded.

Our two apple trees are only a couple years old, so they aren't bearing much (4 fruits per tree).

However, our pears are doing very well this year, especially compared with the dismal failure last year. The branches this year are literally breaking with the weight of the fruit. Thousands and thousands of pears (Bartlett, BTW) will be harvested in about another month or two. Our last frost was around April 1st - this is the key to such a successful crop, I think.

Our apples are looking good!
Many orchards in our area got hit
with frost, but ours didn't.
We expect to be making cider next month,
just like clockwork! :-)
I love cider-time!

Last year I had wheelbarrows full of apples,This year I have 6 apples on the tree......

There is an old abandoned orchard across the street, lots of different kinds of apples...usually,this year there are hardly any there.....

crestedchik, Sounds like West Monroe and the Southern Tier of NY got the same late spring freeze. Dave, We used to incorporate the Bartlett pears from my neighbors tree into our cider but last year the crop was so heavy it broke down the tree and Jay cut it down completely. The addition of pears makes the cider much sweeter because of the high sugar level in them.
