Dave - please put it back!!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Dave - it seems some of us really miss seeing the registration & zone info on member names. See for your self below.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It does make the forums cleaner looking, but I have to admit I kinda miss it, too. New members may not know they can hover, unless there's a reminder up top of each page or something. (ducking)

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I miss it too.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Doesn't bother me.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Doesn't bother me. Just that it make's it harder for me to realize when a member is new.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I've found a lot of people that live close to me just by that little info. won't complain, but sure do miss it.

I don't miss it and it really doesn't matter to me one way or another. People look at it this way, It will give you a chance to get better acquinted with someone when you see a new name. It would give you more of a chance to find out more about a person by contacting them or checking the welcome matt forum. To know a person better is to ask questions and to introduce yourself to a new member. A personal email from an already existing member, I think it would mean alot to a new member, welcoming them to DG and what a more better way to know a person and to find out where they are from,is through email.

CoCo has the right idea about getting to know folks better.

Plus, cleaning up the forums was an important thing for me. So, it seemed like the right thing to do.

We'll give it a couple weeks and see how people feel at that time.

As i'm in the UK i need this feature for trading too, it's good to see 'at a glance' whether or not i'd be able to trade with them, ie. for people in the US, due to legislation etc.

i'm not bothered about the 'join date' but the region is very useful to me. could we have it back please?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

The information is still there if you hold your mouse over it (not even a click is necessary) If you're like most PC users these days, one hand is already on the mouse to scroll down the page...

(Zone 8a)

Well, you know we get lazy sometimes! LOL! But really on our end it does take alot of time to move mouse and wait for info to come up! We surfers want to surf fast!

I miss it too!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

I'm getting used to it and am actually starting to like the "cleaner" look.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Why don't we put it to a vote??

(Zone 8a)

I second that!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Lol - Reb

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Dave!!!! At least we got part of the info back, Lol!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks Dave, this is the part that was important to me. If it stays, I love it.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I used the zone info more than anything, to judge whether information posted would work for me, or if a plant posted would grow for me. I'm not complaining though, and I can do the mouse thing once I train myself to remember that it's an option.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i agree with Joan about the zone info, since i am not too familiar to different areas of the US :). i have an older computer with very limited space, therefor could not afford to download more software.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Did you know Ma Vie that you can click on the name twice and all the old info that was below the name will surface? I know it is a pain but better than nothing!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Even better, you can click but once. It takes you to the poster's member page, where you can read all of his/her vital stats. :)

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I like the old way better!! Change always makes me uncomfortable. I love to see the zone -

Mason, MI

Ditto JoanJ's post! :-)
I use the posted zone info
for the same reasons.
For "trading purposes" it also helps
me see if that person's
plants & seeds will grow in my zone. :-)
I don't have an updated browser yet,
so I still can't "hover" and see the info.
I was clicking on the member name
(to go to their page)
to check zones.
In any case, I'm glad that the city & state are back.
That helps, thanks! :-)

I will put the zone back in, however I am getting strict about what's allowed in the zone.

currently, it's a free-for-all field where you can type anything you want there, and it becomes cluttering when people put messages like "I don't know" or "Southern Europe Zone".

If we will have USDA Zones shown in the threads, then that is exactly what they will be. Our friends outside of the United States may elect to participate by looking up their zone by the average minimum temperature chart (linked from the preferences).

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Dave,

It's so hard to keep everyone happy, isn't it? Thanks for making the effort to keep this place wonderful.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Thank You Dave!!! deeply appreciate u putting the zone back! i just hope other members would indicate their zones to the best of their knowledge. zone/s do help a lot in trading :)! whoopeeeeeeee we're back to normal!!!!!

I always felt that if someone wants all that extra information, then they themselves can email me and would be more than happy to give it to them and it also gives me more of an opportunity in knowing another person /member just alittle bit better by communicating back and forth.

Yes, we're back, but several members had their zones reset. Folks who already had a correct zone in there were left alone, but 946 of our members had extra stuff in there (like the word Zone, or "I don't really know" and such). Those got deleted back to an empty zone, and they will be alerted to this on their homepage next time they come to DG.

So if you're one of the affected people, just click on the homepage and you'll see where to update your zone information. It's a small inconvenience, but this is the only way it should be done, in my opinion. I should have set it up this way in the beginning (as a pull-down menu rather than a free-form field).

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Dave, you're the boss & we love ya!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thank you Dave

Mason, MI

You're the best, Dave!
Thanks for the help!

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

I liked it better when we put the arrow over the name and the same information came up. A neater looking thread.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is great, thanks!

I bet Dave can figure out how to give that as an option, so those that find the info most useful when displayed all the time and those that prefer to see it only when they choose to................we can all have out way! Wouldn't that be great!

I also, golddog, however we are very much in the minority (at least, those who don't like it are being much more vocal than those who like it).

The members have spoken. :)

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

I liked it better using the mouse also. Much neater....and quite frankly alittle more private.

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

I guess I'm one of the minority, as well. I thought it looked neat and when I figured out the drop down, it was useful as well.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

If you want it private, you can omit the information from your profile, Sledder. That way, people will have to e-mail you to find that information, and you can choose whether or not to respond, right? :)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Dave, don't know about everyone else, but I certainly don't want a few vocal, of which I'm one, to set the tone for everyone. Especially you:)
since not everyone is the type to state an opinion, maybe you could take a vote. Maybe like you did the DG contest thingie, once at the top of our homepage? I do love seeing the town and state, but that's me. I think either you or a vote should set what it's going to be, not the ones of us that are the loudest:)

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I'm a minority too..............jeeze..and a woman, too!! That counts as a minority, doesn't it?

"eyes"

Well, the way it is right now is the way it will stay (for the foreseeable future). I'm not going to spend any more time on it.

I think the current method is cleaner than before, at least.

dave
