I have a brug that is about 4 feet high with nicely formed healthy foliage. I've been babying this plant all winter and now it's time for him to enjoy the sunny outdoors.
So, today I put him out for a while, but was dismayed to see that some wind (and not a lot of it) had come and bent a lot of the leaves, causing them to bend and break. :(
I did stake the plant with a 1x1 tied with cloth, so at least the plant itself it standing straight, but I'm losing leaves left and right to the wind. Do I need to harden this guy off before bringing him out or what?
Has anyone else had this problem with their brugs?

Introducing Brugsmansias to the outdoors
I've overwintered daturas lots of times, and always harden them off before putting them outside. Ones grown at cooler temperatures are stockier and have sturdier stems, so maybe yours was wintered over a bit on the warm side? Yours probably just needs to be gradually introduced to the outside world, and put in a spot out of the wind if you have one. You can also try fertilizing him with a fertilizer high in potassium, as that helps to strenghten cell walls. I would go easy on any N for a while too.
The good thing is that now you have all of those "cuttings" that you can start! I'm sure you can get some great trades. :*)
You didn't tell me that Karma. I should strip off ALL the leaves?? Do you stake your brugs? Full sun?
Dave
Karma is right, strip those leaves off. The big Frosty Pink I had outside had been hardened off earlier by moving it in and out to the sheltered back patio. I took a 6 ft tall Candida Yellow out last year and it was torn to shreds within hours. I striped off the damaged leaves and cut the tips out and later it had almost a hundred blooms!!

I left some out last winter and they are coming back!! I planted them in the ground in sheltered locations. The only ones that haven't come back were on the north side of the house.

Thanks Karma and Calalily. One final question (actually a clarification): I should even remove the tip at the top of the branch?
