I just took an objective look at my morning glories and decided I must be doing something wrong. I started the first batch under growlights and they grew, then died. A very nice person here sent me more seeds, and I started them under lights and they did okay. I planted them outside over a month ago around an obelisk, and tonight when I took a good hard look at them, they are still pretty pathetic looking. I don't see any blooms in the works for this year as they are having a hard time even hanging on. They have water, gotten their compost, and I don't know what else I could have done. Thinking ahead to next year, I'm wondering if I should just scatter seeds around the obelisk this fall and see what they will do with Mother Nature taking care of them. Do you think this would work better for next year?
Morning glories
That's how we do it. We just broadcast the seeds around where we want them to grow, and then they seem to appear in mid-spring.
Thanks Dave, I'm going to do that this fall. I hope that works better for me than starting them indoors did.
I've done it both ways, and planting them straight into the ground works much better for me.
I know from experience that MG's don't like to be transplanted.
I've discovered that darius. They were doing well in the house and when I transplanted them they just stood at a standstill, and still are. I'm definitely going to try direct sowing them late this fall and see what happens.
I grew all my Mg's and Moonflower vines from seed under lights. They transplanted okay. Everyday I would have one or two blooms towards the bottom. When we came back from vacation, It looked like a jungle over my arbor!!!! I mean these leaves are HUGE!!! But not one bloom. Same thing with the vines on my obelisk, which is more in the shade. So, sun or shade, no flowers ! What's up with that???!!! Any suggestions?
This may be a dumb question, but suffer the foolish for a moment :-) where I live in NC morning glories are weeds. I still trellis some of them because I think they are pretty. I also have a moon vine from horseshoes greenhouse. Are y'all talking about a different variety of morning glory?

sorry to hear you are having a bad time of it. Seems like the ones I just throw in do the best. the left overs from the year before always come up everywhere. I spent $ with Parks seeds. big disappointment.
I have vines everywhere. Flowers seem slower to come this year . no rain and I can only water so much.
You;ll get em next year. I realize that doesnt; help with the disappointment now.
Belledonna - I know what you mean about them growing like weeds! I have them growing like crazy at my other house along the fence. But these, I wanted to have over my arbor/arch. So I grew Heavenly Blue and Moonflowers from seed. I guess they're tempermental. The foliage is great looking though. I'll just hope for next year.
Celia,
The moonvines I originally started didn't do well at first.
But I started covering their roots with extra mulch like I do my clematis, and it finally took off. I think starting from seed takes longer though. I bought mine from Horseshoes greenhouse, so I had a better jump start I suppose. Don't tell him though, he'll get a swelled head :-)
As for the morning glories, they really are weeds in my neck of the woods. They literally grow everywhere, and you have to pull them up to keep them from taking over. I didn't realize they didn't grow everywhere like that :-)
dig and learn I suppose.

Belledonna, the MG's have escaped cultivation here too (our growing conditions are probably similar.) It's kind of startling to be driving along and see them flowering in a crop field.
Their cousins, the bindweeds are worse :(
I've never done well growing MG's, although I admire those who can. (Maybe I need to talk DH into creating more vertical surfaces for me to experiment on, lolol.)
I put Morning glory seeds in the ground..they came up and are growing tall..but no blooms yet..and now a lot of the leaves are turning yellow and brown...
Mine got the same yellow and brown too!! I just kept picking them off. It slowed down a bit, but still have a few turning now and then. I have so many leaves!!!! No more flowers though after the first few blooms a few weeks ago. It's a mystery to me!
Are you checking them early in the morning? That's when they bloom. Depending on your sun, they peeter out by mid-morning or noon at the latest.
Yep! Checkin' in the a.m. Also checking in the evening for my moonflowers which have also stopped blooming. They WERE blooming at first, maybe too much heat. No buds, just lots 'n' lots of vines.
