HorseShoe came to the underground meeting!

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

Hi y'all,
I'm new here, but have been on the open site for about 6 months now. I leave out near the infamous Horseshoe. He made an appearence at the Hillsborough Underground Garden Club meeting, and we all learned triple the amount we usually do, just because he was there to share his wisdom. What an amazing, kind, humble man. You all must enjoy him very much here at Dave's Garden. We are all still grinning, you would think there had been an Elvis sighting or something. I swear when he walked up barefoot and grinning it was all I could do to contain myself. He's here, look he's here!
Enough gushing :-) We are in the middle of a drought, yet the plants I bought from Horseshoe are the jewels in my garden. I can't wait to see what he has going for the fall. Opps gushing again sorry....
Looking forward to learning from all of y'all here on this forum.

We are glad you are here with us too!!! =]
thanks for the smile!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Well lookee here! I declare! Shut mah mouthpiece!
Yep, I confess folks...I know this woman! She's very outgoing, strongly interested in gardens (her place looks like something out of a garden catalog!), generous, and "very persistant"! (She emailed me weekly, sometimes twice a week, and then even left a phone message to "encourage" me to come to the Garden Club!)
Welcome to DG! And also welcome Shahin when you get a chance. (Folks, he is another member of the same garden group and just joined up the other day.) Belledonna, we should alert as many of the other folks in HUG to take a peek at DG, k?

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Welcome to DG, both of you! If you were sent by Horseshoe, I know you'll fit right in. :)

Richmond, KY(Zone 6b)

Welcome both of you.

One question: Why "Underground?"

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

Yes sir Shoe. Already on it. It was such great fun to hear people say, where did you get this? I've never seen one like it! Course it all came from you, and I didn't know it wasn't supposed to look like that! Maybe the chicken manure helped a little? :-)
Great to be here!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

so glad to have you. Horseshoe is one of our treasures.

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

Why underground? Good question! I guess I should ask someone. Maybe because you plant things underground and it allowed the abrieviation to be HUG Hillsborough Underground Gardeners? Y'all don't let anything slip by here do ya?
I'm not sure I can stay on my toes this much! (grin) I'll sure give it a try though. I'll look into the underground thing. Wonder if it's a consipiricy sort of thing. LOL

Richmond, KY(Zone 6b)

Staying on your toes gives you that svelte turn of the calf the romance novels are always talking about. ;-)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Ha! You go, Brook! hehehe!!!
Planting underground is part of it from what I remember when first told about the group last year sometime. Also, being a play on words, one of the main objectives of the group was to be somewhat of a "rebel" garden club. Unlike many other clubs that tend to meet 'Tuesday mornings at 10' this group decided to not only take into consideration that many folks who work 8 to 5 also have an avid interest in gardeing, hence breaking away from the local "norm". Also, it was/is to be a laid back group...come to the meetings if you like but not necessary; participate in some neighborhood projects if you like (recently was a raised bed garden put in by the members at a local rest home); trade the use of trucks/equipment, plants/seeds, etc; and also to just feel free to "free form". (Good memory I have, eh?)

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

You are good! And I agree that most everyone there is a bit "different". (look who's talking:-) Guess that is what makes it so much fun!
Brook, in order to have the "svelte turn of the calf"
I would imagine you need to have much longer legs than my 4'11" height could carry off. But then I wouldn't be so close to the earth that I love so much. It's much easier for me to weed the garden than for those tall folks, but I would LOVE to be one of them with huge upper body strength. I could carry more rocks and dig more holes that way!

Welcome to DG and meeting Shoe had to be one of the highlights of your life. He is one of the most humble, generous, kind, knowledgable people in probably the whole world. Lucky you, that you get to live near him. Glad you are here!

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Welcome belladonna looks like you are going to fit right in here with all the rest of us. Just don't go believing all the stories shoe tells ya about us they ain't true... lol Well most of them probably are true. lol Nice to have ya in the garden with us.

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

If I can ever figure out the system, I'll send some pictures of my works in progress, and my little farm animals.
Thanks to everyone for the wonderful welcome. Shoe was right you are a nice bunch :-)

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Welcome to the Garden belledonna!!! I must admit that shoe is one of my favorite flowers here hee hee

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi, Belledonna! Welcome to DG! Yeah, we're a pretty nice bunch, if I do say so myself. ;) If you need some help figuring out how to do the pics (or anything else for that matter), let me know! I'll be glad to help ya'. :) Also, if I'm not "around", the Dave's Garden forum is just for that ~ questions about the site, reporting bugs, etc. Ask away and someone will jump in to help in a flash. Welcome again! You're gonna' love it here!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi, Belladonna! We finally met Shoe for the first time at the Roundup in TN. We were his camping neighbors there. :) Glad to see you -- lemme go hunt down this other southern critter from your neck of the woods and say hi to him (her?) too!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

MOLLY! (Shhh...don't mention Shoe as a flower. I can just see the hyperling!)
belledonna, they'd like to see your pics! Trust me, you're doing great!
And as for being future camping neighbors (like Gw and her DH)<-a dH!) one of the next DG get-together is in Wingnut's territory...guess you better start making plans!

Quickly edited cuz GW will haunt me for the rest of my life and I'll never rest again!

Well, 'Shoe, now that you mention it ... http://davesgarden.com/showthread/249782.html And here's the link to some info about the Texoma RoundUp, Belledonna: http://www.moment.net/~wingnut/swaps/swaps.htm You're more than welcome to come! Stop by and pick up 'Shoe on your way here, would ya'? ;)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Wingy!!!....IF I ever come to Texas I'm gonna save up money, and buy an electric cattle prod, have all the DG members sign it, then hand it to you, wrong end first! :>)
We'll call it "Wingnut's Magic Stick"! Ouch!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

ROFLOL Thanks Wingnut!!! I knew someone would slip it in here!! hee hee!!!
belledonna, now you see why he is my favorite flower here?!
LOL All in fun!! I love it!!!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Good job Wingnut! I was hoping that somebody would show off our famous Shoeflower. He is such a pretty flower that we wouldn't ever want people who are new to DG to not meet his trueself now, would we? LOL Shoe, A cowboy friend once was shuffling things around in his pickup and touched his electric cattle prod with it accidently on and WOW did he ever hit his head on the truck cab coming out of it. LOL we got a good laugh out of that. LOL Welcome, belladonna to the most wonderful garden on the internet planet! Lani

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

My DW, Shoe? LOL! Just for that....This: http://davesgarden.com/showthread/249782.html

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Aw, 'Shoe, you read about my new herd and knew I needed a new cattle prod, didn't you! You are too kind! *blush* (I'll be sure and wear Kenny's welding gloves for the "presentation". ;) What a guy!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Welcome to the best gardening site on the web. Lucky you to have met our famous Shoe (who never wears the things). You'll have fun with this gang, you seem to fit right in here. Take a look over on the farm life forum, what kind of critters do you have?

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

Goodness! When do y'all sleep? Lots of fun here I see. I suppose my hero worship (as in comic book character) of Horseshoe has led me into a wonderful adventure! My place isn't that great Shoe pores it on thick sometimes. I've begged him to come out and tell me what to do with the place. I desperately need to turn what once was a horse pasture into something more pliable. But I can't drag him away from his farm for too many trips he might have to start wearing shoes then to keep from stepping in the chicken manure! :-)
I'll post a few pics here. Is this where I do it? Or is there a special place y'all prefer?

d

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

You can post 'em here, you can post 'em there, you can post 'em anywhere. *Groan...* :)

There's a photo forum, Belledonna, for most pics ~ it's good because Dave fixed it so thumbnails of pics show up on the main page right next to their respective threads (before you open any of 'em): http://davesgarden.com/forums/photos.html (Sometimes there are a lot of picture's posted there and your pics fall off the front page kinda' quick, but I'm one of the many that digs for new ones. ;) And there's a Farm Life forum for farm talk and pics: http://davesgarden.com/forums/farmlife.html (I still post pics of my critters on the photos sometimes for those who don't get around to the Farm Life forum)

And (drumroll puhleeze) ... there are the journals! If you look over to the right side of your page, under the green bar that says "Belledonna's Menu", you'll see a link to your journal. It takes some fiddling with it to get used to how it works (hint: You'll need to make it "public" for all of us to be able to see it ~ then you'll need to click "External View" before copying the url to post in a message.). If you need any help, seriously, let me know! I fiddle-farted around with mine pretty good and had to re-do it a couple times before I was happy with it, but now it's about right ~ and as handy as socks on a rooster! You may have to do the same, but it's not hard.

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

Where can I get some socks for my rooster! If my ax where sharp, I would take care of a rooster or two! Socks why didn't I think of that!

Thanks for the help Wing, I think I posted enough pics for now to make a mess.

This is why I prefer digging in the dirt!

d

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, you didn't make a mess, Belledonna! After I posted the above, I saw the pics you'd posted in the Photos forum ~ beautiful place you have there! I really enjoyed seeing your place! We still have some cleaning to do before I can really show off ours. :( The garden re-build and fence building has made a mess of it all. But it'll look great next year!! I hope as good as yours.

Where to get rooster socks? Well, they're hard to find. ;) Grandma Wall always made hers ~ little pockets of leather with tie strings. Whenever the grandkids were coming for a visit, she'd strap them on that old rooster and he'd be walking funny for a while, picking one foot up, looking at it, putting it down only to pick the other one up and look at it, cluckin' nice the whole time. I still don't know if he was admirin' his fancy new boots or tellin' Grandma that she missed a stitch. Yeah, they were more trouble than taking a pair of klines to his spurs, but I think he kind of liked them. AND they allowed him to keep those sharp little tools that he used to put the fear of el gallo in those dogs! LOLOL!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Socks on a rooster! Never heard of that so I had to read it. Good idea your grandma had, it makes me laugh to picture the rooster's reaction.
