iris, daylilies and allium

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi,

We're in our new home and I am in the process of trying to figure out what I have growing from the previous owner... and how to take care of it.

She had:
oregon skies irises
one yellow iris
one dark purple iris
two kinds of un named day lilies

My question is this:
Are iris corms supposed to be dug up and separated from time to time? I am in zone 5 and need to know when to do this... and the procedures involved. I remember as a little girl my father doing this but don't remember much more about the process.

Do you do this with Daylilies too?

Do you dig up allium bulbs before winter or leave them in the ground? Do these also need divided?

Any assistance you can give will be greatly appreciated. I'm floored by how much I do NOT know about these things.

Thanks,
Love

Janie - Daylilies and irises only need to be divided if you think they're over grown and suffering because of it. Sometimes they won't bloom well if they become too crowded.

In your zone both could be divided now. You don't want to wait too long because they need several weeks to become established before the ground freezes.

The alliums are frost hardy and will be fine left in the ground.

Then I think they can wait another year ... we are having such a horrible draught I don't think things will want to transplant very well !~

I'd like to move the Alliums out of the main flower box in front of the house and into the new garden I will be planting next spring. For now I guess I'll leave well enough alone.

Love
