Need info, advice tips on transplanting the above in zone 6, last frost 5/15 (we had snow last week, highs in 70's this week).
I've misplaced the seed packet for the red stalk celery which was grown from seed indoors over winter, and now is really leafing out.
Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes) are grown from supermarket produce; I've been hardening them off with the good weather the last few days, and don't mind if they take over a patch if they wish. How do they do in windy areas? We frequently have strong (20+ mph) afternoon winds, usually from S or W.
Last year's planted horseradish never peeked above ground; Gurney's very kindly sent me replacements which arrived today, and half of them were promptly planted in a thrown away clean plastic pail which I found on the walk back from the rural mailbox. If the pail-planted ones come up, when should I transplant them? And what about planting the other half directly in the ground? (Lots of sand and stones, but some compost--somewhere I can dig down deep enough to plant them the suggested 6" deep.) Again, if they will grow, I don't mind if they spread in their plot.
And do I need to keep any of this stuff far from the rhubarb and asparagus plots? Judging from last year, both of those would welcome a little part-day shade in hot summer afternoons....
Thanks.
red stalk celery, Jerusalem artichoke, horseradish transplant
Celery: plant 12" apart in row, 16" apart in bed, plant into lots of good compost, at same depth as in transplant container, water well and often (hates drying out).
J.Artichokes: plant whole tuber (half if very long), 4-6" deep in average soil, 24-30" apart. Drought-resistant so water well once in a while. Good cut flowers.
Horseradish>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>just stand back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks. Think I'll put the celery in by the tulips and rose bushes as that side of the trailer usually gets some late afternoon shade, and is easy to water with a pan, without dragging the hose over to it.
My Jeruselum Artichokes do very well on top of this windy hill. I think once you get them started you will have them for life as well as the horseradish.
Where did you get your seed for red stalk celery?
