I heard my first cicada of the season yesterday. (Some call it katydid or locusts). Don't they say that after you hear your first cicada it is only 6 weeks to the first frost? That can't be right, it would be in August. Of course this has been a crazy year weather wise.
We have had beautiful weather the last 3 days. Low 80's with low humidity and a breeze, so was able to turn off the AC and open the windows. Of course we could really use a nice gentle rain for a day or two.
Remember in the spring when we thought it would never stop raining? lol I just knew that, come summer, we would be needing some of that moisture.
Heard a Cicada's
I was thinking about that this morning too. I have only had to water a couple of times in June and so far this month. Rained again last night and this morning. This sure is a mighty strange July!!!
"eyes"
The cicadas finally are gone here. We have had millions singing from early morning (4:30) til dark. The damage is to the last 12 inches or so of tree branches. Hundreds of shells lay at the bottom of each tree (we have a LOT of trees in town).
Sombody said this is nature's way of pruning. I don't see it that way. Nature's way of pruning is more like thunder storms and high winds I think.
I thought I'd heard a cicada yesterday and thought I was hearing things, and crickets I always thought they were august bugs!!!!!! We sure could use some rain here, it's very dry. Other then that it's been a great summer so far. We've been able to open up the windows to naturegal it is great, you wait all winter to open up and then close up again to keep the heat out. Thank God for air when it's humid though.
Wow! I'm half a world away from all of you, yet I heard my first cicada too, on Saturday!
I wish I had something that could record in the Mpeg format - you be surprised how different the three species here in the Tokyo area sound (at least the annual cicada - I don't remember if the three-year one is due this time around...)
I've heard them, but not seen any live yet. I have found their shed shells clinging to tree bark and such, though.
They seem to enjoy the oaks and sweet gums at lot.
Here it's chestnut trees. At least for the annual species.
