We need some vines to place on a fence for privacy.
We would prefer perennials. This location is mostly shade.
maybe 2-4 hours of sun.
Anyone have any suggestions.
Thanks
Paul
Need a Vine for Shade
Paul, I have ashady area that gets shade filtered through the pines all day and planted it with Jasmine. In three years it has covered the outside of a very ugly shed and is now going around the shady side of the fence. And the smell is so sweet it wafts through the air making this one of my favorite spots in the garden now! Do not know if it is supposed to grow in shade....but mine is doing great!

Paul,
I have a Jackmanii Clematis that is growing on the north side of my house. It never gets any direct sun, and is doing just great!! It has a trellis that goes almost to the roof, and it is very full and covered with flowers most of the summer. The lack of direct sun hasn't slowed it a bit! So you might want to consider a Clematis. I am also in zone 5, just outside Chicago. Hope this helps,
Debbie
Dicentra Scandens AKA Himalayan Climbing Bleeding Heart is one of my FAV's . It survives in my garden so I know it will make it on your side of Lake St. Clair . I am located approx. 20 miles east of Algonac , Michigan . Happy Growing !!!
Japanese climbing hydrangea ( Schizophragma hydrangeoides) and climbing hydrangea Hydrangea anomala petiolaris) both do well in shade. They are rather slow to take off, but they have the advantage of not pulling mortar off walls, or becoming a nuisance like some vining plants can. Both are described in the plants database, just do a search for hydrangea.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions
Paul
Honeysuckle will grow anywhere. However, I dont' think it will bloom unless it gets more sun than you're describing. And, I'm not sure how much sun the purple foliaged one needs in order to keep the foliage purple. Maybe you can ask at a garden center that sells it, because it would be pretty even if it wasn't in bloom.
Akebia Quinnata - see the plant data base for more info.
Chooch,
Does Dicentra Scandens AKA Himalayan Climbing Bleeding Heart resemble bleeding heart plants in any way? My 10 year old son's favorite plant is a bleeding heart and if your vine looks anything like it he would love it.
Can you tell me where I mite find one. We too live in MI, north of Imlay city.
