We bought it from Zetas Trädgård, Huddinge, Sweden... 255 SEK (28 €) :/
Me very happy now :D
My very first Magnolia :)
Which magnolia have you got there Evert?
Magnolia hypoleuca
Wow, what a green picture! Great photo too, but so green! Getting dry here, so most things are turning beige :( Almost forgetting how green it was just 7 weeks ago :*
Finland is always green in the summer.. :)
Don't know that one Evert. It's one that likes acid conditions, and i garden on chalk. Sounds lovely though - large fragrant flowers in June. I always think it's such a shame that the magnolias most people grow around here flower in the spring and the flowers are so often spoilt by the frost. Nothing worse than a tree covered in brown mush instead of serene beauty.
What age is this one before it flowers?
The frost is problem here too, but usually they bloom a little later here. M. sieboldii, Magnolia kobus (& var. borealis) and loebneri -hybrids are the most grown here, as they are the hardest. Magnolia hypoleuca is such a new species here, and I think not many Finn has got it. I think this has to still grow some years before it blooms. M. hypoleuca is a species that isn't full of blooms I think, it also blooms when it has leaves already, so frost isn't so big prolem then I think.
Found a funny site, go to http://www.ibiblio.org/pfaf/cgi-bin/arr_html?Magnolia+hypoleuca and read edible uses.. :) Would you pick your magnolia buds, boil them and eat? =)
Hardy to about -20 C sounds bad :/ The origin of this plant is Botanical garden of Göteborg, in Sweden, and they have a pretty hardy stock of hypoleuca what I heard from my Finnish tree expert friend :)
