What do you think? We will have to do something before I start gardening.

Deanne, That should be sufficient but it isn't a promise. 10'-12' is a better safeguard. Go internet and see if you can find a list of plants that repel or are at least not attractive to deer. We unwittingly planted our yard mostly with those plants so have little trouble with them in the yard. A good size dog that will chase them will help a lot. Rodale Organic Garden magazine had an article a couple years ago listing a lot of things that will repel deer. Some of the methods include Christmas lights around the area, noise makers that go off when a line is crossed(barking dogs, etc.)a water spraying device that will only go off when a line is crossed, etc. However, most deer will get use to these deterents fairly quickly. You could spray every night with hot pepper, garlic, etc. so the plants won't taste good. Try mixing the attractive plants in with plants they don't like. In other words, try yardening. Lots of marigolds with a tomato plant in the middle of the patch, etc.
