Evert, root beer used to be made from an extract of sarsparilla root, until they found out sarsparilla is cancer-causing (in large quantities). Now in US it is only made from artificial flavor.

Canada sells something very similar to real root beer, they call it birch beer. It is made from the extract of birch tree roots. They also sell "Sarsparilla soda" which is like root beer, but made with the real thing.

Anyway, maybe if you can find some of the sarsparilla extract (it is available here in good herbal markets) you can mix up a batch of real root beer for yourself. Great stuff, so much better than colas. And root beer floats are incredibly wonderful. They were our reward for getting good grades in school: a local restaurant gave a free one to kids who got good grades.

:D Maybe I should ask for sarsparilla extract from some special shops here.. I doubt they have it anyway. :}

I really wonder how it tastes ;)

I have sarsparilla root; anybody know how to make the extract? I would love to taste it!

Evert, my favorite float will be easy for you: strawberry ice cream in 7-up. Put the ice cream into a tall glass, tilt it over to about a 30 degree angle, then slowly pour the soda in. It will make a sort of foam. I agree about the root beer float, which we called brown cow, it's perfect for sating a sweet tooth, but the coke is also good. For cherry coke, pour a generous amount of syrup from maraschino cherries into a glass of coke, then float a cherry on top. If you don't like things quite that sweet, squirt a bit of lemon into it.

Diana sent me some root beer candies..... nice taste :} Not sure would I like it as a drink so much tho ;)

I have to try those floats sometime, my pepsi-vanilla float was awul (not going to try it again, hehehehe).
