Rain vs. watering

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

This may be a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I read or heard somewhere once that it didn't take as much rain to water your gardens as it takes if you water it yourself. Does anyone know how to figure this out? If you usually water your gardens 1 inch a week. How much rain equals that? Is it still one inch? The reason I'm asking this question today, is it's Saturday and that's my major watering day for the week. Last night we got 20 hundredths of rain and everything seems pretty wet today. I don't have much time during the week to really water everything good, so now I don't know what to do.

Joan if everything is wet - I'd skip watering. I think it takes a lot more watering than rain... if the ground is dry. If the ground is good and moist I don't think there's any need to water.

I don't do much watering myself - except for containers and new plantings. Vegtables will also require extra watering if you don't get much rain. It's too hard for me to water here - dragging around a 100 foot hose. I let most things fend for themselves and they do pretty good.

I've always heard that if you don't get an inch of water, go ahead and water till the beds have received an inch. Wish we had rain, it's cheaper than the sprinkler.
