I picked up a copy of "Garden Ideas & Outdoor Living" (page 15) today
while I was out and found something rather interesting. Thought some of
you might like to know ....

(Number of calories burned in 30 min)

Digging & Spading is a great work out for the upper body, back and legs.
Women burn 150 and men 197.

Mowing the lawn, a work out for the whole body (guess they don't mean if
you mow with a tractor ). Women burn 181 and men 236.

Planting transplants, shrubs and trees is a workout for the whole body
and burns 135 calories for women and 177 for men.

Pruning and trimming - workout for hands, shoulders, forearms and upper
back. Burns 135 for women and 177 for men.

Weeding - a workout for the legs,, hips, buttocks and hamstrings (guess
not if I use my bucket!). Burns 138 calories for women and 181 for men.

Raking - workout for arms, shoulders, back, hamstrings, and buttocks.
Burns 120 calories for women and 157 for men.

Now, I wonder why it is that men burn more calories than women ... Hmmm,
I'd better not go any further with this one!

Yes gardening is a great workout, hoped to do a lot over our 4 day break but have been ill since saturday, just my luck and its back to work in the morning.

Gardening is also a good workout for the Soul. A great stress and tension releiver. I always feel the closest to God, when working in the garden.

Why do we burn fewer calories than you guys? Probably the same reason we make $.75 for every $1 you make...life ain't fair (grin)

On a more serious note, Debby, I agree - I feel good after a day in the garden....sore and tired, but at peace. I have lots of good conversations with the "big guy" while I'm on my hands and knees digging in His dirt!

Hey Folks

I think have this fiqured out.

The amount of calories used is a function of work. The article says that all things are equal except for calories
burned. So I am just going to work with that.

Another work formula is basicaly the amount of force to
move a certain mass a certain number of feet.

If I used the 2nd work formula and you have said the amount of work was equal then the only difference is in the average body weight of man v woman National average men weigh more than women.

Simplyfied formulas come down to this

CBW = calories burned women
CBM = ............... men

mw = Mass of a woman
mm = Mass of a man

or a porportionality of CBW/CBM = MW/MM

Or one could also say the proportionality of calories burned
is proprotional to the mass of the ass.
