Does/did anyone ever have a concrete goose in their yard? How about dressing it up? Ever heard/seen it? Just curious to know how far this spread. No one outside Columbus had ever heard of it before! Still very popular here, but few geese have survived the vandals.
Concrete Geese
I do NOT have any concrete goose in my yard. But a lot of people around here do. Yes and they dress them too.
My sister, who lives in GA., couldn't believe it when she first saw them. She said "And you even dress them and put them on your front porches. Wait until I tell my friends at home." SHe really doesn't like them.
SO last year for her 60th birtday, My other 2 sisters and I bought a goose. I was going to GA to see our daughter, who lives about 1 1/2 hours from my sister. Dear daughter & I took it down, dressed it up and put it in her front yard with signs proclaiming her 60th b'day.. The best part was that they were away on vacation for a week, so Mr. Goose was out there, along with the signs all week. I rec'd a phone call when they arrived home. I answered and she said, "You are dead meat". roflol. I finally put one over on her. She said she would get even with me on my 60th.
At first she put Mr. Goose in her backyard where you couldn't see him. She has since moved him by their back deck. She said that he was growing on her. When I asked if she had named him yet, she said that she didn't like him that much.lol
Since then I think she said some people down there do have the geese. Not too sure.
Maybe you can be the one to get our southern Ohio custom spreading through the country! No one else in the country that I know has ever heard of it, until they came here! From Indiana, New York, Oklahoma, Arizona, Florida, and Virginia, everyone who came and saw them thought we were crazy! ROTFL.
Anyone else in the country do this? Calling all closet concrete geese admirers!
The lady down the road has one.She dresses it for just about every holiday...including NCAA Basketball Tourney (KY Wildcat blue)
Some people in our town dress them as other animals: to see a goose dressed like the Easter Bunny is too funny! How about one dressed like a pilgrim?
The concrete geese have infected northwestern Ohio also, one of the local greenhouses/craft place has a part of their shop dedicated to nothing but goose clothing, quite expensive too!!! They are also starting to make smaller ones like goslings and clothing for them also. I guess if you're going to have a goose in your yard around here it best not be NAKED!!!! I'm sure in my town there is an ordinance about naked farm animals prancing around the yard, I can't imagine what the fine would be!!!!
Regards,
not a goose lover
I don't want one, but think they are cute for anyone that wants to dress them and just have fun.
There is one in Gulfport, MS that is dressed for Halloween, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day, Rainy days, you name it. It was stolen one time, and made the front page of the newspaper. I don't know if the one there now is the original or they got another one. The owner is really creative with her (his) costumes. Its on the beach highway and probably caused some traffic jams, just seeing how it's dressed today!
I'm not even in the US so I don't qualify for this thread but I've seen small garden statues of geese here.
We have a town famous for it's concrete cows too
http://www.mkheritage.co.uk/mkm/concows.html
Too cool! A couple years ago Chicago had (I think) papier-mache cows decorated all different ways scattered all over the city. For a really bizarre concrete art idea, check out www.infomagic.net/~martince/wlcornfield.html for the Dublin Field of Corn
Around here they have wood carvers that carve your trees in to all kinda creatures. There are some people up on the main road that have a bear, must be 15 foot tall, they dress hin for all kinds of stuff.Right now he's dressed up in his fishing gear, but for halloween they have a sheet over him with ghost eyes,Christmas he has santa outfit.Easter he has a bunny outfit etc....We had some trees cut down and are thinking of getting the one carved into a bear too.We had the tree cutting guy leave the trunk 15 foot tall.....I have a large cement chicken, never dressed him though....maybe I will....
Go for it Karen! Be sure to take pictures for us!
