It's kinda of hard to see but the stamens are black & yucky looking. The plant seems healthy enough & I haven't had this happen before. Could it be thrips? They seem to be destroying everything else this year. I hope my other peonies will be Okay.
What's wrong w/ my peony?
Baa

The only thing I can think of is botrytis, probably induced by thrip attack.
Poppysue, to check for thrips, hold a white paper under the flower, and flick the flower so the thrips fall onto the paper. You can see them then. Try spraying the buds before they open.
I think Baa is right about the botrytis.... and I think it's been aggrevated by thrips. We've had an especially rainy season so far. I cut the plant back and sprayed. Hopefully next year will be better for it.
