that does well in just afternoon sun. Tried morning glories just don't seem to get really going. Help thanks in advance
Please does anybody know of a climbing annual or perennial vine
If you get 6 hours of afternoon sun, that means full sun and lots of choices. Clematis loves sun on its flowers but be sure to shade the roots. I see you are in Zone 6...you have a wonderful opportunity for climbing roses. Don Juan is a beautiful red, golden showers, a very nice yellow. The choices are many. I don't understand why your morning glories didn't take off though. They are a cousin of the infamous bind weed and usually are rampant growers. Is your soil good? If you think about roses or clematis, the soil should be amended. If you want a rampant grower, try silver lace vine (polygonum)...seems like it grows 4 foot an hour. Other choices, trumpet vine is nearly indestructible and Wisteria is good if you have a structure that is very sturdy, 'cause it will pull down your gutters and downspouts. Happy gardening!
Hybrid musk roses do well in shady conditions. Some of the larger climber types include Pax, Cornelia, Mozart, Darlow's Enigma and Buff Beauty. In zone 6a, you may deal with a little bit of winter damage, but they are totally unscathed in my 7b garden. An annual vine that can do well with limited light is thunbergia, or black eyed susan vine. Many of the clematis varieties can do well in partial shade, such as the sweet autumn. I would NOT go with trumpet vine or wisteria unless I had a structure built out of 4" metal or even sturdier!
I have a Jackmanii Clematis that is growing on the north side of my house, and never gets direct sun, and it is growing great. I gave it a bigger trellis last year, it's full and always loaded with flowers.
I have a small flowering yellow bell clematis on a south facing fence. It's thriving, loves it there.
Thanks all for your suggestions...I think I will try a couple of clematis. They will be growing up a trellis on our gazebo and eventually I am hoping it will clamber over the roof....and hang around looking English country cottage like. The toes will be well shaded.......thanks again for all the help. I am keeping the others in mind for a pergola type thing over the patio. This get's very strong sun about 3 o'clock on and is not nice for the dinner time out on the patio....some plantage would be nice for shade. :)
Many choices of vines to choose from. The Moonflower which blooms in the evening hours and has a nice fragrance to them and grows anywhere from 12-15 feet. Also have the Black-Eyed Susan Vine and grows to about 6 feet. You also have the Cardinal Climber and that can grow anywhere from 10-20 feet and flowers from mid summer - frost. Then you have the Scarlet-Runner Bean which gets vibrant red flowers, then attractive, tasty long bean pods. Can also try the Spanish Flag Vine and that get anywhere from 9-18 feet.
These are all annuals. There are many vines out there to choose from. If you want to attract Hummingbirds, plant Honeysuckle or even a Cross-Vine. Also there are different types of Jasmine that you can plant. Hope this helps.
Would you like some clematis tangutica? I have it climbing over my garden shed. There is also another younger purple clematis growing in there. And coming up the other side of the shed are three other clematis! As you can tell, I like "Clemmies".
If you like, I also have some climbing hydrangea, but it really needs a solid surface to cling to, such as brick, or concrete.
