Achimenes trouble

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

My little guys came up just fine but after they got about 6' tall, the leaves started to curl and brown at the edges. I can't see any insects. They are in pots in partial sun. What's the problem do you think? Thanks!

Spider mites. Spray with plain water every day being sure to get under the leaves. A squirt of soap in the water is even better.

Thanks so much...should I cut them back? If I cut them back will they come back this season?

Will this spread to the other potted plants around their pot?

Spidermites crawl or are carried by ants or on the wind or your hands/clothing. Be sure the neighboring plants aren't touching, and keep an eye on them.
If you cut the achimenes back, it will delay flowering but they will be bushier. I cut spidermite infested parts off quite often. It's the easiest way to get rid of lots of mites all at once and sometimes makes control easier.

I'm relatively new to this but when I start something I am like a dog with a bone! Are these the pests that if you rub a piece of paper on the back of the leaf you will see reddis color? I can't see anything with the naked eye.

Dale: Yes, they are little red bugs. Sometimes in the sunlight you can see their web on the plant stem.

The easiest way to find them is to hold a piece of white paper under the leaf and flick the leaf with your finger. The bugs can be seen crawling on the paper.
