Hello all - anyone from NYC, and I hope that means New York City. As a UK resident I'm not sure but I think it does.

Anyway - just to say that I watched a very interesting documentary on our TV about New York Central Park; the gardeners, and the way it was maintained. Not in depth but it showed the park zoneing whereby each gardener had a particular area to care for. I had to chuckle when it showed that to save expenses they got rid of 30 managers. Just the same over here - not enough indians and too many chiefs. It was very fair and revealing in that it stated many gardeners were trained horticulturalists but could not get on with pure gardening because of time spent on menial tasks such as clearing away rubbish left by the public.
Also, interesting to see how they re-seeded bare grass beneath trees. Quite normal tilling and seed sowing, but then they scattered a thin layer of hay over the seeded ground. Hardly to keep the sun of because it was shaded by the trees. So I'm guessing it was to conserve moisture and protect from birds until germination.
Central Park is certainly a vast area to find in the centre of a city, and I'm sure, a most grateful foresight of some city plannners or perhaps an individual. It would have been nice if the program could have been many times longer and in much more detail.

Peter.

yes central park is a sight to behold. it has been many many years since i've been there. when i was young you couldn't walk safly in there. and it looked like garbage. even the little zoo was not nice. i would love to see it again coming back to its glory. even diry it was a sight to see.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I would love to see it in person, if I could just get over my fear of NYC being a big, bad city. I grew up in the northern burbs of the Chicago area, pretty shelted, then moved to a small Ohio town in 1981, so my experience in "real" cities is pretty limited. I'd still love to see Central Park, though!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

NYC-to me means New York Central-Railroad-My daddy was an engineer for the railroad. I rode on many NYC trains growing up-then penn central-then grand trunk before he retired!
So when I saw those initials-NYC- that was my first thoughts-Ive never been to the NYC-Park. Probaly never will! Ive heard so many stories about it-Im kinda like Kim-intimidated by it-scared but curious. It sounds really nice and was a "great" plan of someones!!!!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

I've always wanted to go to NYC! (Yeah, it means New York City or "The Big Apple" to me, too) I've never been. Maybe one of these days I can go to get it out of my system. The idea that a city that big was built by humans just astounds me! And I'd love to take a whole day to explore Central Park. With over 800 acres, I'll bet it will take all of one day just to hit the highlights!

BTW, Peter, look what I found: http://www.centralparknyc.org/index.php Central Park on the 'net! The site contains a history of the park as well as pictures, bibliography and a list of movies that have scenes shot there. I'm heading back over there right now to root around some more.
