watering Q-true or false?

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

What do you use on watering your plants or seedlings in your house?
I have city water that I have been using on mine-
I do have well water outside that I will be switching too(hopefully)soon to harden off-I heard I should mix the water and slowly back off the city water...is this true?

Is well water better than city water for plants?
Ive always heard yes-wondering what you KNOW?

thanks friends,

Dori,

In theory, city water, because of the chemicals added, is not as good for your seedlings as most well water. But watch that proviso. Some wells contain all sorts of heavy minerials that are just as bad for your plants.

I think the real key is consistency. I use city water, and haven't had any problems. But I continue using it even after transplanting.

Basically, you should be pragmatic. If your seedlings seem to be thriving, then obviously there is nothing wrong with the water you are using.

Unless either water supply has a huge amount of dissolved minerals in it, you don't need to "wean" a plant from one to another. Your municipality can give you the results of the latest water quality test if you contact them, and that will include any dissolved minerals. You should have your well water tested annually anyway if you drink it and not just use it for irrigation, so you should know how much iron, or calicium, etc. is in it too. Your local extension agency can help you to do a water test if you haven't had a recent one. I'ts not that expensive, and sometimes it may make a huge difference to your garden because of the minerals, or the pH.

If you're like me, have a lot of plants, and use a good bit of H2O in watering, I always used well water. Just because it is cheaper to use well water, than city water. (Water Bills can get out of hand). The well water has never hurt my plants ( I would not use the well if you have a old gas station around, because the gas from the old gas tanks can leak and get into the well) But I also use city water, during the winter and I have not noticed anything wrong with the plants.
