Elephant Ears and a slight miscalculation!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I planted two elephant ear bulbs I got from McClure and Zimmerman about a month ago. They are doing just great! Unfortunately, I did not plan on them doing THIS well and miscalculated their span. They are now in danger of being injured by my trips back and forth to the pump. Is it alright to dig up the bulb and transplant? What will happen to the new growth? Thanks in advance for your advice.

In my experience elephant ears transplant pretty easily. My parents had some in their yard in Gainesville (about 150 miles north of your location) and some years the leaves were over 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide!

Also plan that the more you water and feed them, the bigger they will get! The bulbs also multiply pretty fast, so you will soon have a whole "herd" :)

LOL lupine, I've moved mine in the middle of summer, and just made sure to water well and take as much soil from around the bulb and it should be fine for you.

Can I put an elephant ear in my pond? Or would that be too wet for it?

Poppysue: They are toxic to fish if they ingest the leaves or bulb. You can plant the elephant ear in a pot and keep the rim of the pot above water level.

LOL, LOL, LOL Lupine! I shall transplant them tomorrow! I do believe there is a type of elephant ear (several species claim this nickname) that are made for water gardens.

I have Black Elephant Ears in my pond and also have had the green leaved EE growing in ponds. If you have fish, be sure they are potted in a pot and the rim is above water level. Sometimes Taro is confused with Elephant Ears.
