Rooting Hormone

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Although it is a bit late this year, I want to pass along a tip about rooting hormones. Rather than a commercial product, the Locals here say to take about 10-12" of the tips of weeping willow as soon as it just starts to show the slightest shade of greening... long before leafing. Put the cuttings in a quart jar with spring water, and refrigerate. Usable in a week or so... just dip cuttings in and use as you would with a regular rooting hormone.

Thanks. :)

That makes sense! I just went to a short session regarding propagation of woody plants and the head propagator at the arboretum said willows root so easily because they contain an abundance of a hormone called auxin. There's a great article about willows and their rooting properties in Fine Gardening; you can see it online here:

Hey GW, that is a great article!! I guess I will now have to buy a type of willow just to have access to that hormone. Some of the other articles were very helpful also.

Thanks, Donna
