Green coneflower

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Bobbie noticed that we have a green coneflower mixed in with our purple. Does any one know how this could happen? The whole flower is green. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

I can't wait to see it Jim sounds neat.

Jim,

Park Seeds and a few other companies offered 'Green Wizard', the flowers are green.

Jim, there is a virus that attacks echinacea. It makes the flower all green and little flowers will grow out of the top of that one(flower). If that's what it's doing, and it was a normal coneflower last year, pull it up and throw it in the garbage.

'throw it in the garbage"!!!??? (That's what the doc told my mom to do on the day I was born!!!...Jim, save that sucker!)

Shoe, not if it has a virus, you don't want it to spread to the others.(Glad your mom didn't toss you in the trash though)

I was a little wrong, it's a phytoplasma instead of a virus that causes it. I was at a short course for growers and remembered one speaker mentioning the green blooms on a regular purple coneflower. Here is a link http://www.ent.iastate.edu/ipm/hortnews/1998/7-24-1998/yellows.html

This changed on it's on. We haven't put anything new in this bed. I guess I had better pull it to be safe. Thanks Cala for the link. Here's the pictures. http://davesgarden.com/showthread/258858.html

Jim, I'm not sure if that's the problem I was talking about. The ones I saw didn't have any purple in them at all. I'll see if I can find a picture.

Here is a picture of one that has it really bad. This also explains it better.http://www.plantpath.wisc.edu/PDDCEducation/MasterGardener/General/Slide41.htm

Ick! Alien Echinacea! I'd pull that sucker for sure! Jim's is kind of pretty though. Maybe he created 'Green Wizard' and he forgot!! LOL

Now there's a thought.

Hey I did post about a foxglove changing colors on a post started by Cala. The one about the white foxglove. I did find a picture of that and I will post it. Maybe my soil is lacking some nutrient or to much. Hey the green is a good conversation piece. Maybe I can sell my secret as soon as I discover what it is.LOL I can see the headlines now. Lagrange man uncovers secret to have different color flowers every day. Then the article would read. He still can't pay his bills even though he made a fortune because he spent a fortune trying to change them back.

Calalily....that one with the disease looks a little like those chia pets......Very scarey. The other one doesn't look diseased at all.
