Looking for Onions????

Evansport, OH

Hello I am looking for a type of onion. Not sure of the name we always called it spreader Onions I know some people call them scalions they are a bulb that when planted each bulb will produce about 10 onions if they are left in the ground each onion will produce a bulb for the following year. Has anybody else ever had these??? We just realized we forgot to put ours in the basement last fall and they are no good now I have checked with our local greenhouses and the few that did know what I was talking about said they haddent seen them for years. Thanks Dan

You are probably talking about potato onions which used to be common around southern and midsouth homes. They keep dividing with a few large bulbs and lots of small ones you can replant or eat too. dI tried them here in S.Cal. but they didn't bulb up for me.

Try Southern Exposure Seed Exchange which is in Virginia and which has a website-catalog. Don't have the URL handy but it is easy to find.

frog...marshseed is correct, they are potato onions. I have some but they are already in the garden and growing (I just keep a perpetual onion bed going yr round). Can't remember where I got the yrs ago but will keep an eye out around here. I someone still has some that are not planted I'll let you know.
