mud and rocks

I'm hoping some of you will be able to help me. My parents had to have their septic replaced and the yard is rocks and mud. It's slightly sloped on three sides. They want to do something so my Father doesn't have to mow it. I suggested using some of the rocks to create small beds of plants and mulching the rest of the yard. My Mother was thinking of planting some sort of spreading ground cover over the entire yard. I was thinking unless she gets alot of plants they won't spread over the entire yard quickly enough to look good. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Of course this all depends on whether it dries enough to work it.

Rocks with some home grown moss might help. Just throw some stale beer or/and buttermilk in a blender with some moss roots...spray it on and keep it all wet. Very peaceful looking when it is done.

Elsie - maybe you could build a few beds and also plant ground covers on the sloping areas that are hard to mow. I would get the entire area mulched as soon as you can. It doesn't take long for weeds to start growing and then they are a lot harder to get rid of. Lay thick layers of newspaper down under the mulch and then you could plan the beds right on top of it ... or plant ground covers right through it.

Kat - I have moss in my yard and I love it. I don't think it's what my Mother has in mind , but I'll ask her. thanks.

Poppysue- thanks for the suggestions I'll pass them along. Now if it would just stop raining for a few days.....

I don't know if Gill Over the Ground grows as a perennial in your area, but it makes a great ground cover. It never gets more than a few inches tall and mats wonderfully and quickly at that. Mints are also good ground covers and will lend a lovely fragrance to the yard.

I've never heard of Gill over the Ground. I'll have to check it out. My Mother is scavenging my yard for anything. she's going to take some mint, hosta, vinca and some lily of the valley. She found a rose groundcover planted at a nursing home but so far she hasn't been able to find where to buy it.
thanks for your help.

elsie, a groundcover type rose or rose color groundcover? For ground cover, I have vinca vine, burgundy glow ajuga, majus repens, sedums, violets and the "creeping charlie" that the weedkiller has not gotten yet ) I do not mind the plant, but part of the family likes a nice lawn and cc does take over, but you do not have to mow!!!==maybe that is Gill over the Ground"?
