has anyone used "rubber mulch"? It is made from shredded auto tires with all or most of the steel removed. There is a guy in Hudson,Fl who colorizes it by adding dye colorant and rotating the shreds in a concrete mixer...and I mean a CONCRETE MIXER mounted on a 10 wheel truck. Works great where you want a permanent mulch or for pathways and is a good use for old tires.

Rubber mulch
DO NOT put this anywhere near your well. Our next door neighbor used it to cover his driveway, and his well was contaminated for months. They had to take it up and bring in water.
How so? Did the dye contaminate the well? Obviously the rubber from tires couldn't or the whole world would be contaminated.
I'm not certain, all I know is some chemical leached into the soil, and it was only after about 6 months of this being put down. They had it tested and it was from the tire mulch. I'll see if I can't get ahold of her and find out for certain, but they did take it up, and their well was fine for about 5 years or more til it started drying up.
