Raphine, VA(Zone 6b)

I have these brown, hard shell bugs that are like pointed on my Japanese maple Tree!!
What are they and how do I kill them???
Thanks!!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

are they japanese beetles?

Raphine, VA(Zone 6b)

No, they are a brown bug with a sharp head that snap when you pick them up.
I found them all over my maple.
I'll try to scan a pic tomorrow.

ok, I'll be looking forward to the pic then to see if we can help :)

That would be some kind of beetle.

Sounds like a bug we use to play with when we were kids, we would flip it over on its back and watch it flip way up in the air and land on its feet again! we'd also just hold its little body and watch it pop its little head back and forth. But I have no idea what they were called...sorry
Is this it? http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/entomology/factsheets/clickbee.html

Do you mean the ones that look like thorns?

sounds like Pincher bugs to me. We used to play with them when we were little. Poking at them with a stick & they will "grab" on with their pincher. They seem to be quite strong! Sorry I don't know the real name. they are anywhere from 1/2" to 3" long. Does this sound like it?

What we call pincher bugs are earwigs (sorry, don't know their real name). They love to hide in dark places in the daytime. Officially they don't bite or pinch or cause plant damage. In reality, they do. I don't know or care if it is from a bite or a pinch, but it is mildly painful when they do it. They love to hide inside rosebuds, lettuce, any composite flower, and either they are eating the real damaging (tiny) insect, or they are the ones doing all the eating.

What a name: earwig. Sounds like a punk-rocker kind of toupee!

we get the earwigs also. What we call the pincher bugs are something altogether different! WAY meaner looking!

I'm sorry , got so busy but never sw anymore of those bugs on the tree, guess I just freaked out since only half of it even had leaves this year.
Thank you for all you answers!!
