peonies after 2 years

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

i planted peony tubers in 2000 and this year, not 1 but 4 different plants decided to come up. One even grew up through a collection of rocks i've been collecting for a rock garden. mother nature sure is grand and unexpected. :)

Hi debi_z, yes peonies are wonderful. The longer they are left undisturbed , the better. The clump will increase in size each year. Have you had blooms on these plants before? John

John... how is ur peony? mine are 4' tall and loaded with buds! the biggest bud is about a quarter in circumference. am eager for the bud to bloom.

MaVieRose, it is looking great! All the attention it received last summer is paying off. Nowhere near as big as yours yet, it is just about a foot tall so far. Peonies around here are called Memorial Day Flowers, as they bloom about the end of May. Thanks for such a vigorous plant.

BTW, the desert bird of paradise is alive and well, but has not leafed out yet... Is it late waking up in the spring?

John,

is it still cold where u are? here in Hesperia, we had experienced 90 degs during the day time 3 weeks ago, but of late, night time temperature has gone down to 35 degs. F, daytime high is in the lower 50ish.

all the desert of paradise are heavy in leaves and are forming buds. i water & foliar feed them once a week with Miraclegrow 15-30-15. they need lots of sunshine to do well.

thanks for all the lily and hibiscus type seeds. they are all growing nicely. the alcea's are about a foot tall. i am sure my garden will be beaming with all kinds of flowers this summer. thanks for helping me with the seeds. my garden is looking great. the thieves that stoled my plants before will no longer have the opportunity to steal anything as i have planted the seeds on the ground. thanks John!

MaVieRose, temperatures here have been as varied as you describe out there. I have the bird of paradise in the full sun, maybe it needs some miracle-gro... If I scratch the bark lightly, it is really green and alive under there... Glad to hear your seeds are doing so well, enjoy! John

John ... although some plant reference material/s state no fertilizer needed, it does not matter to me. i always try to foliar feed the plants. regardless, it has always been my personal conviction that plants do need nutrient like people would need nutrient to keep them going.

john, i planted these peonies bare root from a package 2 years ago. i've never seen life from them. :) so i'm very excited, i thought they had died a graceful death.

Debi... what kind of peony do u have: tree or herbaceous? just curious... ma vie

Sounds like herbaceous to me, as they 'came up'... MaVieRose, is it possible for tree peonies to put up new divisions? I know they are grafted, but the idea is for them to put out own roots eventually. I have never grown the tree kind, but I love 'Joseph Rock'. John

John... to be honest, i do not know the answer. remember it is my firt time to grow them too, just like u are. at any rate, here is a url for tree peony ... http://www.goldenport.com/peony/tpcare.htm , wish i knew better John. am still on the look out for a good price tree peony myself. will let u know if i find one.
