what would be the best

Greenfield, IN(Zone 5b)

What would be the best fertilizer for Dicentra Bleeding Heart??? My sister has 2 that came with her house. The first year they were gorgeous but the past year they were not as full or had near as many blooms. It gets partial shade (from the heat of the day) and she waters it when the soil is dry. She does not have a compost pile or access to manure.

Also for my benefit what is your favorite store bought general fertilizer for annuals and perennials???

Thanks, Julie

Julie, your sister can get composted cow manure at either Walmart or Home Depot if there is one in her area. It's only about 3 bucks a bag and can be lightly mixed into the top soil without fear of burning. I use it all the time in my vegetable garden with good results.

Thank you Big-Red! Julie

Great suggestion, Big_Red and I agree. I use it all the time in my garden, too. :)

dignbloom, I like to mix my own organic fertilizer which ends up costing more than buying a synthetic bag of fertilizer like 10-10-10 unfortunately. If I were going to use a synthetic fertilizer, I would buy something that was slow release so I'd lessen the chances of burning my plants up. :)

H'mm Composted cow manure has been adding tilth to garden soil for over 3,000 years. Can't stop, cause it's the nature of it.

thanks everyone. My sister will be using the synthetic slow release fertilizer. I will be using store bought compost, manure & something to lighten the soil as I am digging new flower beds this year. Julie
