Beta test a chatroom with me?

If anybody wants to try beta testing a chatroom with me, make sure you're logged into DG and go here:

http://davesgarden.com/chat/

I'm currently in there and would like to see if this works for anyone else.

Dave

Dave been in, had a few words with big red, seems to work ok.

Alan.

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

Dave, had a brief talk with AJC but now don't seem to be able to post any messages. Must have bugs, huh?

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

Dave, when I logoff the chat room it kicks me out of Daves Garden and also closes my browser (Netscape). Don't know if the problem is on your end or mine.

Alan, when you asked if I was in the room long, I wasn't ignoring you, it wouldn't let me post a reply. Seems to be working ok now, though.

Wierdness here. Well, this isn't working as well as I had hoped it would. :(

More playing with it, I guess.

Jake's in there now.

Dave

Yeh red, thats what happened to me.

Glen Arm, MD(Zone 7a)

Just got booted, stopped allowing me to post. When I logged off the browser closed

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

Alan, Jake; just had a fairly long conversation with Dave, everything seemed to work fine. Jake you were in the room at the time and then you logged off. I guess it'll take a while to work out the bugs.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I couldn't see a button to post a message in there. I saw that I was in the chatroom, and the box to write in.... but there was no way to submit a message.

?????

poppysue, you hit enter.
dave its good, when you iron out the odd bump it will be brillant.

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

Poppysue;

Try clicking on the box, you should get a flashing cursor, then you can type your message, then hit enter to post.

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Strange, after Applet starting I'm not getting anything. The room is blank, I'll post a pic of what the room is like for me.

Tim, are you behind a firewall? Your browser must have the access to go out port 6666 for the chatting. Do you think this is causing your problem?

Your browser is definitely not reaching the chat server.

We've had several others successfully get in, so I suspect you're behind a firewall.

Dave

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Yeap am behind a firewall. I don't think I can go out on 6666.

Tim: What ports are open on your firewall?

Dave

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Dave
21 and 80

That's it?!?!?! Sheesh, Tim, I don't know what to say except I'm sorry. :-(

I keep 21 blocked because of security holes constantly coming up in the ftpds. The last thing I need is something using that port so that the script-kiddies out there can blast it. :(

80 is, obviously, taken. :)

Tim, I'm sorry, but I think you won't be able to chat behind that firewall. Try it from home!

Dave

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Dave
No problem. I'll have to give it a try at home.

My other option is 27, but I'm sure you have it blocked too.

Wigan, Landcashire, United Kingdom

Dave i am having a problem too, i can write a message but no enter sign on the page, why is that?

Patty: Are you at a workplace or at home?

Dave

I wonder why you can't get in. Have you been able to get in at all yet? Ah, do you have java enabled in your browser?

Patty,

Under your menu (at the top of your screen), click on "edit", then choose "preferences", under "advanced", there should be a checkbox for "enable Java". Make sure that box is checked, and click OK.

These instructions are for Netscape, but IE works pretty much the same way. Let me know if this does it for ya!

What browser are you using?

Trish

Greenfield, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave, I really had fun in the chat room, still trying to figure out ROTFLMBO. anyway I think it is great! Julie

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Julie-

Rolling on the floor, laughing my butt off :)

I meant to tell you there, but was to busy laughing at Dave and GrannyLois :)

Hope to see you back!

Trish

Patty: I'll have a test script for you tomorrow. It will try to tell me what the problem is.

Dave

Patty: I think the problem may be that your ISP is putting you behind a firewall of their own, and now allowing your computer to access certain services on the internet, like my chatroom.

I'm going to try something else and see what happens.

I have a firewall and was able to get in there and post with no problem. I love it!!! :)

Your admin must have left a few ports open! At the office we only keep 4 of them; telenet, ftp, smtp, and http, all other ports are blocked.

Lucky you!

Lots of admins leave everything above 1024 open. The DG chatroom uses port 6666, which is the standard chat port.

If your office blocks this port, it's likely because they don't want you in chat rooms while at work.

Dave

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

When I click on live chat I get a page with the heading and nothing else. Help.

Verdesign: You problably don't have Java enabled. Can you enable that?

Dave
