Centaurea imperialis

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

My seedlings are now about 6" tall and are sending out tendrils for climbing. What I need to know before transplanting them is what kind of trellis do they need? What I mean is do they need something rough or will a metal trellis suffice. I just don't know what kind of "climbing apparatus" these little beasts employ!

Dale - are you sure they're centaurea?? As far as I know there isn't one that climbs....

OOPS..sorry ipomoea x imperialis. In my zeal to find out about them, I put the wrong name!

The ipomoea is a twining vine. I grew them up strings last year and it worked out great. It makes for easy clean up in the fall too - all you have to do is cut the string and pull them out. A metal trellis will work - as long as it has cross bars to climb up. They'll twine around a metal pole but will keep sliding down and never get very far - I learned that when I tried to grow them on my birdhouse poles.

Think I'll try a bamboo teepee....that should give them something to hold onto. I can also rough up the bamboo a bit. Thanks Sue...sorry to get you all excited about a climbing centaurea! LOL
