I think I found the answer!!

Always before now I have had a terrible problem with squirrels digging in my pots and containers. Last week was the last straw - I had just filled a container with pink geraniums and pink Dianthus. The next morning, dirt and broken flowers were all over the patio. I have tried using Cayenne pepper, but they just yelled Ole and kept on digging. I read on one thread that Squirrels hate blood - so I replanted the peices and sprinkled it generously with Blood Meal!! I then sprinkled it all over my beds and other containers - nothing has been disturbed!!! I am so thrilled to think that maybe now my bulbs, etc. will stay where I put them.

Cool! Thanks for sharing, Azalea! I'll keep that in mind if I ever have that problem. I have tons of squirrels out here, but thankfully they don't bother my plants. I really don't know what keeps them from it!

I see squirrels running around here a lot but they are so busy trying to carry off abd bury the neighbors walnuts that the don't have time to mess with my pots! But the Deer just ate my strawberries again! GRRRRRRRRR!

O Thank you sooo much!! I was just about to ask if anyone knew how to get rid of them dang squirrels b/c every time I go out to make my tour of the beds....I see little holes where the squirrels have been digging up their stash of pecans! This is the first year that they have bothered any of my beds, so I am off to buy my blood meal!! I'll show them who's boss!! LOL
Thanks PJ!

Just got back from Wal-Mart with my blood meal!! now the box says to water it in....will this still work to keep the squirrels away?? and do you redo it after the rain?? PJ, can you give me more details as to the way you done your's??
LMN soon

Mollybee: No---Don't water it in. It only works as a repellent when dry. Just sprinkle dry blood meal on top of the soil. You have to re-sprinkle after it rains. Works for Rabbits too, they hate the smell of it. For flower beds or vegetable beds, you can pour it out in a line around the circumference of the bed, and they won't cross over the line.

Thank you Debby, I think I have time to go out and do it now before it gets dark. Seems like the squirrels do most of their digging before I get out of bed in the mornings, so I best do it now and get a head start on them!
Thanks again

Thanks Debi - I would have said the same thing - I didn't know they wouldn't cross a line of it tho - neat!! Maybe it will go farther that way. I still have holes dug in my paths tho - it may be possums or racoons, we have them too & chipmunks. I have only used it once since we have had no rain for awhile, wasn't sure if I needed to replace it, I guess I will, it's cheap enough and easy to do.

Great!! I've got a couple of rabbits(almost stepped on one tonight) that will come right up and eat in front of me!! The only thing they don't like so far is the brugs.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

!! That is a good thing then isn't it Cala??? This is the first year for me having Brugs and the 2 I have I would kill over hee hee

Azalea: The holes you have are problably from Chipmunks. My husband thinks they are so cute, he feeds them. Then they bury sunflower seeds and bird seed in my flower gardens, flower pots and then the seed starts to grow in small circles. Plus all the digging they do in the flower gardens and the tunnels. DH thinks it is so funny to watch me pulling up the round plugs of seedlings. I guess they are better to have than moles, at least they are cuter.

Skunks also dig holes at night looking for grub worms.
Molly, yes it's good they don't eat the brugs or they would be stew!!
