I babied a geranium through the winter, the wind knocked it over last night and broke two of it's main branches--can I root it in water or just stick it in soil or compost it? It was to go into the planter today--I am a day late-like usual.
broken geranium
This sounds more like a Pelargonium than a Geranium. They will root really well in water or in soil, whichever you prefer. Very forgiving plants!
Thanks Baa-in the water it goes.
I "ditto" Baa's recommendation...
I always root mine in water. :-)
i always root my cuttings right in the soil. i find that the roots are a bit brittle when rooted in water. i think the plants do better when i root them right in my potting soil mix and just keep them realy wet for a few days. that and you don't have to repot them, saves a step.

You're right they are more brittle when rooted in water. I believe it is because the roots that develop are created to withstand the water load, when they are transferred to soil they have to adapt again for soil.
Technically cuttings should always do better in soil but if cuttings rooted in water are potted up early they can do just as well as soil rooted cuttings.
Thanks for the help, will try both.
I have had good louck with placing my geraniums in with the mother plant, she gives off something that helps them root faster.
I broke a stem of one of mine too and just stuck it in with a houseplant. It's ready for moving on now!! :-)
