I've heard both schools here locally, Dori____. A lady at a local garden center has some huge buddleia's with trunks a good 4" in diameter. She says if you want them to get big like that, you should just wait until new growth is showing on the branches and prune out the dead.
...Yet I've read elsewhere to trim them down to about 6-7" in the early spring. Who knows!! I have four myself, and I never know what I want to do with them. I always end up trimming them back.

I always cut mine back, but it is more to control size and shape than anything. Just got mine done yesterday. As soon as the new shoots get eight inches long or so, I will be rooting cuttings to share. So, Dori, you have any of the white or pale pink, or alternifolia??? I'd love you forever if you said yes!!!!
I have only grown thena few years. But each April 1 I cut them back to about 3 inches from earth. They grow. believe me!
