Sissy lives in Marietta Georgia...Need to know...what to plant at her new house...She says she wants it to Bloom in teh summer.... Live through the winter...and has afternoon sun! HELP!!!!! I don;t know what to tell her and I AM the older sister....I need wisdom!
Sister in Georgia needs to know what to plant
Tell her to plant one of the shrubby sages, or even several. That's about all I'm willing to do for a cute girl.
lantana, the perennial yellow and red one.
Evergreen viburnum, there are many good ones
the big lantana (not one of the newer annuals) will bloom all summer up to frost.
that's about all I can think of that blooms all summer. does she want shrubs, flowers, trees? what?
tiG, sage does that, it even blooms in the winter here. Between the two, one can have blooms almost year round, and with viburnum, there is beautiful greenery to fill in. I have two kinds of the old type lantana, and only one of sage, but I plan to get more sage. You have to get purple sage to live in Texas.
I have yellow Coreopsis which is about to bloom, by the time it is finished, it's big sister Black Eyed Susan will take over for most of the summer, Then the "big" Swamp Sunflower" and hardy blue Ageratum will last til frost.
I see she is pointing out Mariettas famous "Big Chicken" in the background.
tiG, wonder how the butterfly bushes would do? Do you think they would fit her needs? I know mine stayed green pretty much all winter and they usually bloom all summer. What about your's??
yep! turn at the big chicken I am told. Never saw it myself. Want to though! I will email her tonite and tell her what all you suggested! Hope she s at the lottery place getting my winning ticket!
butterfly bush would do good to. it all depends on size, and what's she's going to use it for. both lantana and bfly bush would be better:)
jut got a "e' off to her. thanks for the info!...a co-worker got that yellow Bfly bush last year. said she just loves it. I just have them in shades of purple. and maybe a white one somewhere.
mingsmimi, you do know that the butterfly bushes root very easy from cuttings don't you?? That is how I got my first one, my sister broke me off a piece of hers and I rooted it in a glass of water! It was super easy too! you should ask your co-worker for a cutting, and if she is a true blooded gardener she will be more than happy to give you one. lol It never hurts to ask!
Didn;t realize they grew well from clippings. ! Thanks!!!!!! Good idea. Like maybe in August, get a clipping?
hmmm If I remember correctly I got my cutting about this time last year. Yea I am pretty sure b/c sister came up from Locus Grove for her daughters b/d and it is in the early part of May. So yea I would try getting one now.
oh! See here (zone 5)we cut ours back to like 4 inches the first week on April. so, you see, there is nothing to get. did you just take like a branch?
Yes, it was just a branch. In fact all the ones you cut off of it can be rooted too!
oh no!!!!!! I will have to run out in the yard to se if they are still there. or if the garbage man took them. OH NO!!!!! Its dark out there now. Or I would be there in stead of writing to you!
Did you by any chance have any rain in the last day or so? I mean is the ground wet? If so, they might be ok until morning..like soon as it gets day light I would run out there and get them and plop them into some water.
rain! We had monsoonal rains on monday..(.I clipped back on Sunday) and it rained friday? and today! We are quite moist here! A bit ooozie. The smell of earthworms is in the air.....
O yea then with that much rain, I think they will wait until the morning. They should be just fine I think. so not to worry about going out in the dark of night lol If I were you though I would get the cuttings in the morning and check to see if they are still alive...all you have to do is scratch the bark of the branch with your fingernail and if it is still green then you are good to go! (If you scratch one spot and don't see any green...move down on the branch and scratch again) any sign of green and you are set!
okay! Good, hopefully I didn;t put them in the trash. Will keep you posted. thanks for info.
Anytime Mings! Glad I could help!!
=:)

MOLLYBEE! Where are you? I got like 12 branches ! I can;t believe it. I made a fresh , angled cut at the bottom of each one and nipped off there the little side branches would of been coming off. Right now. It looks like I have a vase full of brown branches. lol. They are still alive, I think all of them. Thanks to all this rain. Hopefully. they will root. How did you start yours? like that. I am thrilled!
O wonderful news mings!!! Yes that is the same way I started mine too. Looks like you are going to have tons of butterfly bushes!! yeeehawww!! Soo excited for you! Maybe if you see that you can't use them all you can trade them off for other stuff. That is just wonderful!! O a little tip for ya, once they start rooting I would put them in a bigger vase or bucket that way when you go to take them out all the tender roots wont be tangled together.
O Happy Day!! *Ü*
these are brown though from winter. Like I said , it looks like a vase of dead things. you still think it wll be okay? I hope so. The inside looks healthy. Guess time will tell. I am VERY excited though. I was telling DD and she was like ...oh really???? So, I might have to put some in at her place if they do root. Thanks for the info. Will keep you posted.
Mings - I bet there is a magazine that is specificly for southern gardeners. I know Southern Living always has gardening articles but I can't think of a totally southern garden mag. Anyone know of any? Maybe a subscription would be a good gift for her.
