?Poppysue...When can I plant poppy seeds?

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

I am zone 5. When can I plant my poppy seeds? The Igor and laurens grape? I just put them in the earth? how deep? How close ? I am SO excited! I am going to put them in my Delph garden along side the dirve way .Gets pretty good sun there. Plus, Its a good focal point for those drive by gardeners!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

You can plant them any time now. It's best to plant while the ground is still cold. I just sprinkle them on the surface of the soil and don't cover them. They like sun but will tolerate partial sun. I have some pics of seedlings on my home page http://communities.msn.com/PoppysuesGarden/poppiesfromseed.msnw

poppysue! So glad I posted this question. it is sprinkling this moring. Maybe I will go out and do it now! Those photos are great! Now I know NOT to pull what ever I see coming up out! lol...Thanks a bunch! Have a good day(Exit ~fade to Mimi skipping off to garden}

Well, I did it in the rain! April Showers bring poppies to Mimi! yeah! I can not wait to see these! your photos are always so helpful. Everyone;s... I have learned so much! thanks again!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

poppysue. Was just looking at the rest of that link where you have all your poppies... What do yu do? tag the plant first so you know which it is to gather seeds from since the blooms are gone? is that what I see? Very clever

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

I looked at your poppies, too, Poppysue ~ gorgeous! I especially like the doubles. Do they cross-pollinate?

How soon can i plant poppy's? In Wisconsin. Snow is slowly going. can I as soon as it's gone?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

They do cross pollinate. Doubles will cross w/ singles and visa/versa. The bees are all over the poppies when they first open up in the mornings. If your determined to only have a certain variety it's better not to plant others near by. Mimi - the tags in the pictures are flowers that I bagged with remay fabric before they opened. I do that to keep them from crossing and mark them to collect the seed.

Midwestsb - you can plant them anytime. The cold won't bother them a bit. They'll germinate when the ground gets warm enough. They like an early start while the weather is still cool.

Poppysue!! What can I say, your gardens are BEAUTIFUL!! I found your beds breathtaking to say the least. The cramming as you call it, is lovely. I would love to have mine look half as crammed as yours lol and your pond!! and your fish!! you have done an wonderful job, so keep up the good work!! I must say you have a "show place" indeed!! I wish I lived closer, b/c seeing it in person would be a real treat.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks, Poppysue! I've always liked poppies, but never had any until this year ~ just planted the seeds a few weeks ago of Fairy Wings and a red one. I hope they do well. So I can bag the blooms for true seed? They are self-fertile or do I need to hand-pollinate? So sorry for all the questions and thank you so much in advance for your help!

Yes, her gardens are beautiful, aren't they Mollybee?! How 'bout we drive on out to Poppysue's place and get an in-person garden tour? ;-) I can swing by Georgia on my way and pick you up. Looks like it'd be worth it!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Wing, I am packed and ready! LOL It really would be a well worth while trip! Poppysue is one heck of a gardener in my book! Wonder if she makes house calls? I could sure use her help around here hee hee

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

No kidding, Molly! I have a bunch of new flowerbeds that need help!! Don't forget your pad and pen to take notes when we get there!

Poppy, I'll bring some mesquite and a brisket for dinner! Seriously, I have your page bookmarked and will go back to scrutinize your gorgeous plants to get some ideas. You really should be VERY proud of that yard! Please post more pics in the photo forum! I'd love to see them!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Gals! If you come up here you better bring your shovels and digging forks cause I will put you to work! Actually it's looking pretty grim right now. I have a ton of clean up to do since I was so lazy in the fall. Plants are just starting to show a bit of green. I can't wait for the warm sunshine - it's been a long winter! I'll post pictures when I have something worth showing off ;)

Wingnut - poppies are self fertile. They don't need a pollinator. I bag them before the buds open and remove the bag when the petals are ready to fall.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the info, Poppysue! Yes, post pics when everything wakes up! And how about I bring my favorite gardening tool for our visit? http://davesgarden.com/journal/si/5176.html I can hook up the "Redneck Wrecker" (flatbed trailer on the dually truck) and away we go!! *GRIN!*

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

OK Poppysue, I have to ask you about one of the flowers I saw in those pics. It was in and around the sun dial, it is the hugh purple ball looking flower. Is that Clemone?? If so that is the biggest one I have ever seen. Me and TraciS were sitting here at my computer drooling over all those pretty flowers you have, and we just couldn't tell what those purple ones were. They look about like a softball size or so, what is it??

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Mollybee - those are the giant allium. They're a bulb - like an onion. They're easy to grow - I've had them for a several years.

Bring that wrecker Wingnut!! I could use that - for sure!! ;-)

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

I feel sick...I scattered almost ALL of me poppy seeds yesterday before I went to work. We had MONSOON rains today. For like 3 hours. I bet they are all gone...huh?? My head was spinning today when I looked out the window at work. I wanted to SCREAM!!!!!!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Although I am over run with purple flowers I am now going to be on the lookout for some of that Giant Allium! I will have to tell TraciS she was right, that is what she thought it was!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Molly let me know whren you find it. I could use some purple in my yard.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah, those are some pretty things, aren't they? So are those stepping stones... Maybe, while I'm there, the Hoopty will take an "accidental" scoop near them that gets put on the trailer. *grin*

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Mimi, did you plant the Lauren's Grape too? I have some left if you need a few more just in case your's all washed away. Let me know.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

JoanJ...I planted it all . I have like 10 poppy seeds that I was going to put in a container...Out of what you gave me and Poppysue. I just couldn;t believe it. I never saw so much rain. I was hoping that they didn;t all wash away. I felt like I was watching a train wreck happen and there was nothing I could do to stop it. All those seeds......all that water......

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Mimi - I don't think the water will hurt them ... but if it was that heavy they could have washed away. I'll send you some more Igor too. I have other colors too if you'd like.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Only if it is not a bother . You have helped me so much already. I just had NO idea of the rain we were getting ... I can get a S/A/S/E off to you.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Mimi, email me your address again. I'll send you some more of the Lauren's Grape. I can imagine how discouraging this would be. You were so excited to go plant them. I was wishing this morning that I would have had mine out. It's raining here today, not hard, just a nice steady drizzle. It's doing a good job of melting the rest of the snow.
