not what I wanted

I thought that spagnum peat moss came like a moss you could tear off and line a wire basket or whatever. But My DH brought me a bale and it was loose peat. what Am I looking for ? what do I ask for? I also want to use it to cover soil in potted plants to hold in moisture. The fine peat will work but the Moss pieces don't float up as much.

I believe you are looking for spagnum moss or sheet moss. You should be able to get through almost any garden center.Peat moss is the baled shreaded moss that is added to soilless mixes or sprinklid on top of plantings to help eliminate dampening off of seedlings.

How about spanish moss. I buy it at walmart in the craft section and use it in hanging baskets to add a touch of niceness. Usually only when I am giving the basket to some one. The ones I have here at the house I just stick pine straw in them.

Great idea Jim! I have lots of pine straw and it never dawned on me to use it for the baskets...Now I don't have to go to town tommorrow for moss!

when my DH brought home the (bale ) of shredded peat moss and it was not what I was looking for he said we need to make a trip southward to gather the spanish moss,I use too much to buy it at the craft stores.I had used it in the past. after our rustling vacation, We brought back bucket of white sand, sea shells, seaweed, and all we could cram in the trunk on our way back home. I saw the liners in 12" metal baskets for $16.00.I think some of you are having the same problem I am,in knowing what form to ask for.DH went to Lowes and thats what they had. maybe didn't carry any other. Oh! well I will come back here to see if there are any other suggestions. Thanks for your input!

If You have "Big Lots" store you might go there. Last year I got some 10" wire baskets with the coco fiber liners for $2.99, a great buy I thought! The may have them again this year, haven't looked.

I have bought sphagnum moss (whole, not ground) at my local garden center. It wasn't a huge bag, small in fact, but I feel sure they could get a larger bag.

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

so...ginger. do I ask for whole spagnum moss?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

tink I believe you call it sheet moss over here!!

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, louisa. I'll ask around again. looked for it myself. So many things are higher up than I can see. however if the bags are smaller, they will be ground level.

Hobby Lobby had it last year, in two different brands.
