Passon Flower Vine

Mobile, AL(Zone 8b)

I have a passion flower vine that has run down the fence and up a tree. Although it is interesting to see passion flowers blooming in an oak tree, the place where I want the flowers (on the fence) is now bare of even leaves. All I have is naked vines. I know its probably too late this year, but when should I cut it back and how should I cut it back?

First of all, passion flowers only flower on new growth, the only one I have experience with that is an exception is P. racemosa. It will put out a sprout from old wood that will have only flowers while tips have flowers and leaves.

I trim mine just about whenever they get out of control. The question is how far can you trim back and not hurt them. This also depends on which species you have, some will not take it if you trim to bare wood (no leaves).

Can you tell us which one you have? What color(s) are the flowers? YOu can trim the vines back to a few nodes above the last leaves, then when you get bottom growth, you can trim them back some more.

That sounds like my Incense, except that it keeps its leaves. The blooms last year were a good 40' from the base, with leaves all the way but blooms only in the trees on some branches. Mine does branch all by itself.

I don't know what I have. I do have alot of buds just now, when they flower I will take a picture and send it. I didn't know they would flower only on new vine. That's exactly what mine is doing. Mine is way out of control. The vines must be 30 to 40 foot into an oak tree. I can't even reach to last leaves let alone a few nodes above. Let me see if I can't identify what I have. I'll let you know. Thanks for your help.
