So what did you do today?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It was a gorgeous day here, so I went out and dug up all the grape hyacinths that I could find in my yard, before DS mowed them down (I know it's the wrong time to move them, but last year I waited until they were through blooming, and by then I couldn't find them.)

Then I potted them to let them continue whatever dieback they can muster - it took me eight 3-gallon pots to get them all tucked away - whew!

Then it was on to the vegetable garden, where I set out four kinds of lettuce seedlings, and planted my Rose Gold seed potatoes. Hovered over the newly-planted asparagus bed for a while, but still no signs of life :(

It's definitely looking more like spring around here! So what did everybody else do on the first Saturday in April?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

I shivered!!! Too cold to work outside so went into the city. Bought supplies for the garden of course but resisted the temptation to buy more plants. The annuals at the superstores looked really sad after the frost last night!! Terry it sounds as though you worked up a real honest to goodness sweat!! Lucky you!!

I travelled 70 miles west to a rare plants fair in the city of Bath. It was a beautiful day although I didn't cast me vest seeing as the may blossom hasn't even made an appearence yet. Spent a fortune I haven't got but did get some nice plants and had a good chat with a few people.

We went to a landscaping seminar in a town about 45 miles away. It was pretty interesting. They covered topics like planting and maintaining lawns, planting and caring for trees, designing flower beds, and planting perennial beds. The guy who did the designing flower beds portion kinda irritated me and put me in a bad mood though. His idea of a perfect flower bed is to plant only 3 kinds of flowers in them, in long rows. The slide that he pointed out as his favorite was a bed about 100 feet long, with marigolds in the middle, red petunias all the way around the marigolds, and then some purple flower I couldn't recognize from the photo. The bed was in the median between two highways. Not a typical planting for the home gardener I don't think. He hates plants with variegated leaves and he hates bi-colored flowers, so almost every slide was a flower bed with those in and he just kept saying over and over that it looked like a weed patch. I was so thankful that I don't live in that town, or my flower beds might have gotten their own little place of glory in the "bad flower bed" slide show. I wonder if anyone in the audience recognized their homes and gardens? I recognized some businesses, and he said he'd taken the photos from around town.

The perennial guy was much better, and he was last, so I did cheer up some before leaving there.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Today been working outside all day to repot bigger and some new baby plants to put medium pots and now my back is killing me awful but I do enjoyed it very much and so exciting the first time this year.

Watered all the seedlings. Planted seeds for Jacob's ladder, campanula, mums, catananche, malva, aster, clarkia, african daisy, hollyhocks, and poppies. Top dressed clematis and roses with compost. Had to run to Walmart and their plant selection this year is AWFUL! Not to mention the SMELL in the "poison" area (chemical aisle). It was cool but a great working day!! Oh, and I transplanted a rose bush.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

we drove around 130 miles today. Just talking. Dh and me. fun fun~ went to an antique mall, walked around there for 2 hours. Its getting harder and harder to find Victorian stuff ... Didn;t buy anything. Found a place to get Amish bird houses ...will hint to that for Mothers day... Went to one town and couldn;t get in.had all the streets blocked for a maple festival, so, went to another town and antiqued there and went to lunch. Fun fun. There was still snow in Chardon Ohio...Saw some on porch steps. BBRRRR....When will Spring be here???? The Willows look like they are ready to burst forth at any given moment. The cows are still wearing their winter coats. Alpaca farms are springing up all over the place. Must be the new rage!

I worked 12 hour shift and came home and watered seed trays and seed bed and 51 pots of lilies that I plan on bringing to the roundup. Then I walked down to the goldfish pond and admired the Tenn. iris that came from my greatgrandfathers home place. Well I guess my ggmothers place as well. It bloomed(1 of about 10) for the first time today. It is a beauty. I'll try posting a photo tomorrow.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

yesterday we started by going to Lowe's while it was still cold and getting manure and humus. Found 4 torn bags of water saver for $1, so grabbed those. Bought two new hummingbird feeders and put them up right away.
we finally made our very front street 'patch' into a lasagna bed. Took all the newspapers and cardboard we could find. Put down all the humus we had, which we knew wouldn't be enough at the time.
Planted my Harlequin glory bower in that bed.
Put the Natures Helper on the big hosta bed and the tropical bed for brugs. Put down mulch on newly redone small hosta bed. Both my bleeding hearts are blooming and they are gorgeous, thanks Cala.
Weeded the top of the huge tropical bed, and moved my grandfather's dianthus. Took out two small holly types that really have never gone there. One I'll try to bonsai, it's got a lovely shape.
Helped DH put back the milk and wine lilies after we thinned them out, they came from his father and are Dh's pride and joy.
watered all my out door seedlings twice.
went back to Lowes for more humus, and grocery shopped while we were out.
went out about 11 and covered everything just in case. doesn't look like I'll have to do that again!! yea!!
wish it would warm up a tad so I could get something done before the kids get here for family day. It's time to move everything out, but that's a huge job. May just have to put on a coat and brave the wind.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

tiG, this is Jim's wife Bobbie. I know that my mother used to have another name for dianthus and I can't remember what it was. Do you happen to know. Thanks Bobbie

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I don't know another name, sorry. Usually I've heard most of the nicknames, but not one for this.
Someone else might happen along with one though.

Hamilton, Canada

Dianthus is sometimes called Sweet William.

Days activity:
1. watered plants at 6 a.m.
2. took cuttings of "Crown of Thorns" and potted them up.
3. soaked more Morning Gloy seeds to grow for the Morning Glory WAR @ davesgarden forum
4. potted up Bird of Paradise, and canna seedlings.
5. bought more shelving and hung up to move 23 pots of brugs in the living room window.
6. went to florist around the corner and bought several more African Violets-yellow, white, mauve...took cuttings and started more African violets.
7. started hierloom tomato and pepper (yellow, orange, chocolate, red, green and purple varieties) seeds in flats under growlights.
8. put my feet up with a cup of tea to rest my knees.
9. cleaned up my front flower beds and sowed poppy seeds.

Everyone is keeping busy :)

Bobbie, Hi there!

I don't know whether it's the same name but Dianthus here are called Pinks.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

aren't pinks and sweet william both bienniels? I thought of both those, but didn't know if those applied to perennial dianthus or not.

Not here in the UK. Sweet Williams or Stinking Billy in Scotland are the biennials but Pinks is a name used for the single, clump forming perennial Dianthus and Carnation types.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I remember it was pinks. Thanks so much for the help. Bobbie

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

I planted more gladioli bulbs and transplanted three shasta daisys and that was enough for my baby to let me know about it.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks for your help Baa, now I know.

My pleasure!

Didn't do much in the way of gardening today, tommorrow will be different!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

The smell of freshly mowed green onions and gasoline still lingers as I type.It was a beautiful day, and I took full advantage and mowed half of our property.Dandilion fuzz skipped around in the breeze and bumblebees got drunk at the crabapple trees.I wore a red t-shirt,hoping to attract hummingbirds. They've been seen in town, but not here.Violets are blooming and the red tulips are glowing. My petunias are starting to fill in their containers and the oriential lilies have started to emerge.

Tomorrow's supposed to be even nicer!

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)
