Yes, the sun came out and louisa went out!! I wish I had stayed at home!! Promised myself I wouldn't buy another plant until the new beds were ready and willing!! What did I do?? We were supposed to just go to Sam's and then quickly home to paint the outside trellis. I sort of put on a sweet smile and asked if we could just visit one nursery!! Two hours later we loaded the truck with three trees and ten shrubs!! So all this new stock is being parked. Ah well, once a gardener, always a gardener!!!
Spent a fortune
Know the feeling Louisa! Swore I wouldn't buy anything else til i'd prepared the garden and now have 4 pulmonarias, 6 daphnes, a hosta and assorted miscellaneous waiting outside the back door.
That's of course in addition to all the seedlings at various stages of growth on windowsills and in cold frames!!
As you say "Once a gardener........"
:)
phil we just can't say no can we, or walk pass plants for sale!! It's just impossible!! The garage is full of tender plants too awaiting their home. Pretty soon it will become so hot that I won't be able to work outside anyway!! The wet weather has held up our plans I'm afraid!! Well at least your plants are safe outside your back door - mine are not..deer you see...lol!!
I promised myself too louisa but couldn't control myself when he offered to go do the grocery shopping and let me drool in the nursery, lol'
Oh dear, now I don't feel so bad,we also took a drive today' My tea rose is soaking along with the climbers, more bulbs and some bamboo' Lol,this is so typical of we gardeners, like an "addiction",I'm in DENIAL too' :)Sis'
Mmmmmmm deer get the munchies with just about everything don't they? Oh, poor you, Louisa. You haven't sussed a deterrent yet then?
I know the feeling well. went to lowes this morning for some potting mix and before i left I had sppent way to much on dirt, and plants and plants and plants. I just can't resist it either.
That's why I haven't gone anywhere yet as I know I would spend too much.LOL
I'm fortunate that I don't have anyplace close to go shopping, but that credit card and the Internet keep me in trouble. Just ordered a banana and pregnant onion. Yesterday it was a blue hibiscus, and the list goes on. I've got to stop. I know I must have some kind of disorder to keep ordering plants and especially when I don't know where I'm going to put them when they get here.
Ah, so good to find kindred souls.
Know the feeling well Margaret - LOL
oh gawd the bf just dreads what i will buy for the yard next. just tonight i asked him where he wants to put a hardy banana tree that gets 20 feet told him he has till june 15 to decide cause it gets planted the 16th
troy, any idea how wide these bananas get? Mine is hardy also, suppose to be to -20. I can't imagine seeing it grow two foot a week once established.
no i don't just went to banana tree and it does not say there and the info i got with it is in the greenhouse. will look tomarow and if it says i will post but a good guess would be 5-6 feet. just got mine last weekend and it is puting up new growth already about an inch yiippee
We no longer have a place to eat. My two-shelved growlights are in there, and a couple days ago, dh built a third shelf on it so that it goes all the way to the ceiling now. All full! The hosta's from the co-op are all planted in gallon pots and sitting on the table with all the leaves in. I have plants sitting all around the growlights also, plus in the windowsills and whereever I can find room. Tonight I told DH that I wanted to hand lights from the bottom of the table and put plants on the floor underneath. He didn't even acknowledge that I had spoken. LOL! I don't have beds ready for all of them, but just as soon as the weather cooperates, I'm taking a week's vacation from work and doing nothing but building beds. I have my plans, just need to convince Mother Nature to cooperate.
I went to Walmart today to buy potting soil, as it was on sale for 1.50 for a 40 pound bag. Got lots, so I can still plant more seeds if I can figure out where to put them. (Bedroom's not full, and neither is the living room, and bathrooms. Still have lots of room). Didn't only buy potting soil though. I bought 6 more packets of seeds, some canna's and some callas too. Good thing I don't have any greenhouses within 150 miles. LOL
I figure if I keep this up, it's going to irritate DH enough to start thinking seriously about a greenhouse, or at least a cold frame.

Hey Joan,
Eclipse told us on another forum that here in Iowa he has potted up his cannas to get a one month jump start on the bloom. Better get some lights under that table and get those cannas going too. :-)
Just finished potting the cannas and callas. I forgot to tell you about the casa blanca lilies that I also bought. Four of them. They are potted too. None of the above is up yet, so don't need lights yet. Sitting on the floor in front of the kitchen cupboards. Thought about putting them in front of the TV, but decided against it for now. That may be pushing my point a bit too far.
I think the growlights hanging from the bottom of the table is a wonderful idea, don't you agree? More space to be utilized by something besides dust bunnies. Not going to be any feet there anyway, as there's no reason to sit at the table when it's full of pots. LOL!
If I suddenly disappear from here, look in the yellow pages for mental institutes in North Dakota. DH might put me in one of them soon, and I'd enjoy hearing from all of you. Would help with the withdrawls.
Yes, and I just rejoined The National Arbor Day Foundation to buy more trees & get my free babies! I'm addicted as I don't even know where these trees will go yet!
Not to mention the hundred plus seedlings that are anxious to be put in the garden! Another month to go until our frost date & my DH is being so patient. Every South & East window plus a PVC built lighting cart are currently accommodating the quickly growing seedlings!
ROFL - just as long as you all have room still for your hubbies, kids and pets then surely it's OK!! Hmm!! Did I mention the 6 Viburnums, the 8 junipers, the 2 Chinese privet that I bought 10 day's ago!! I think I'll go get a flashlight and take a peek outside, just in case the deer are having a banquet!! If they are, I swear I'm going to kill myself!! Hey my American friends.....see what you've done to me!! I said flashlight instead of torch!! Sheesh!!
Yep, Louisa, here i am :)
I'm most impressed - you kept up with our change to BST - but then you've still got family here?
But please see:
http://davesgarden.com/showthread/219171.html
and let us know (or are you the same as DG?)
I did Phil - I'm chasing you around!!! Yes, still have lots of family in the UK!! I've done it again. Went to bed at 10 tonight. Woke up 2 hours later and here I am!! Silly isn't it!!
Oh, that's rotten. I'd like to sing you a lullaby (not that you'd like it lol) but have got to get ready to get off out now. TTYL :) In the meantime, hope you get back to sleep soon!!
you should have seen the look I got when I told hubby last night that I bought 10 plants while at walmart!!! then I brought out a bag of hosta bulbs, and he looked up and said 'that's all?? that's it??' I must admit, I did restrain myself, but if it had been a nursery, that's another story!! Going to a big plant sale this weekend, and saving my money, that's all:)
lol tig - a happy hubbie huh!! Or maybe he doesn't mind!! What did you buy?
got 10 Blue Cadet hostas. He can't stand to walk by a seed rack, he puts his arm around me and says there's no way in h*ll I need another seed!!!!
lolol!!! Our poor husbands!!! Poor nothing!! Mine is the first to 'show off' the garden, like it was he who did the planning, designing etc!! I must say though, that he really is becoming quite interested and knowledgeable about plants!! The hostas sound lovely!! I have only three and no sign of them yet of course but once we have made clearings in the woods then I shall grow many!!
louisa, are you interested in enough hosta seeds for about a tray full?? they've been in the fridge and need to get planted soon.
I see so much of me in all of you!!! rotflmbo
Joan I have plants on the floor in the dinning room where he sun hits-pushing table back a few inches a day for more sun! Making more room in the window! hehehee
Morph-I just joined the arbor society also! More trees-I dont even remember what kind they were. giggle
Walmart-LOL-seedstarter,seeddome with pellets,2 bags of lilies-27in all! stayed away from the seeds though! ;]
Tell dh I got how many iris from the co-op from bleek-NOT!
****Put me on the list to look for in michigan!!!(when they commit me)
Isnt this FUN!!!!!!!!!!!! (:-P)
I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one that has invaded my own living space with plants! For years my DH fought to keep a place to sit at the table. In defense, he put up lights in the basement, but I just planted more seeds and the table was fair game again. The next year, he built my greenhouse, but by the next year, I was still using the table. By now, he's added lights and light racks to our Red Shed, as well, and still there are flats all over the table most of the time!
As of today, I have all the intended spots filled with plants, and my livingroom is filled with begonias, lilies, and rose bushes. DH has cleared a spot next to the old greenhouse and put in the foundation for a 22X32 ft. greenhouse. We hope to have it up this summer, but, I'll bet he'll still be fighting for a spot at the table!
lolol!! What a wonderful way to spend a life!!!!! Tig, thankyou so much!! I would love to take you up on that offer but I have so much else to do before I can even start thinking of seeds. By the way, I bought an Akebia - still not planted of course but will start a layer for you as soon as it is in the ground!!
Weez, thanks to you my house is being taken over - will have to build a greenhouse myself SOON.
cool louisa! thanks:) and if you change your mind about the seeds, I bet I still will have a few unplanted :)
Sounds good tig - thanks!!
i had the Bf read what all of you said about invading the house and he just didn't get it. but he says the exact thing as all of your other halves say at least i haven't invaded the house.....yet :-)
I am so anxious I'm not even waiting to see for sure if the butterfly bush is going to come back.(I think it died.) anyway I'm looking around for another one. The butterflies are flittering all over my lilac and it is similar to the butterfly bush I saw a red one at the walmart web site not a bad price either.Except I just look, don'buy from off the net...yet.by the way it's a good place to learn about the plants they have.Gee I love to share info...
Peggie, try Vitex! The butterflies and hummers like it as much, and it's growing wild here. The highway Department used to plant it on the freeway, don't know if they still do or not. I have plenty if you decide to try it, and it roots real easy. Mine is purple.
sounds great aimee, would love a start whenever you can send it .let me know about postage.
Peggy, if you need butterfly bushes, I can root you some when it warms up a bit more here. :)
