Invasive weeds disguised as herbs/flowers

Toston, MT(Zone 4a)

I just ran across this and thought I'd pass along the information. Both of the below weeds (Tansy and Oxeye Daisy) were sent to me upon request thinking they were neat herbs and flowers. I'm thankful I read about these and I'm going to be more careful about the seeds I want to plant.

Sorry. I couldn't get the site through the links.
Here's the home site: http://www.3rivers.net/~tomelpel/plantfamilies.htm
Scroll down to the family "Aster". You will find Common Tansy and Oxeye Daisy there.
There is also info on other invasive weeds at this site along with some beautiful flowers that call Montana their home.

I have both of these planted and love them. One man's weed is anothers flower. If you don't want them to spread dehead them after they flower. I can see where they could be invasive in a warmer climate. They have not escaped my garden beds here in zone 5.

I'm moving this over to the Garden Talk forum.

Thanks for the heads up, Heidi. I also acquired both of these in trade this year. Debby, I'm encouraged by your experience in Zone 5 . . . . . anyone have experience growing either of these in Zone 4? The last thing I need in my garden is more weeds! LOL Thanks in advance!

Oxeye daisy does quite well here in NH at zones four and five, I do not believe it is considered an obnoxious weed here, except by lawn neat niks ( of whom I am not one). If you want to keep it form spreading, deadhead.

Good to know-thanks!

A weed is only an unwanted flower.

If you don't want to grow either Tansy or Oxeye Daisy then don't plant the seeds you received in a trade.

I do not consider any plant a weed, even dandilions, the leaves are delicious in a salad and the lovely flower heads make wonderful wine, if you can get enough of them.

i think i have the most dandelion and daisy lawn out there. and i love it. have bad things have happened on days involving lawns.

the roots are medicinal too
it what the proper term is but it cleans out your urinary system. dia something

have you made dandilion wine garden dragon? that would be soo neat i've only read about it

did you know that the dandelion is not a native of norht america? but the plant was so useful that many native americans incorporated it into their lifestyle and it became treated like a native plant.
