how do you keep grass out if your garden.

Do you mean seedlings or spreading?

If it's a running type, you have to sink a barrier around your garden or be vigilant at patrolling the perimeter and pulling it up/cutting it back when it gets out of bounds. Bermuda is the most nasty monster I've ever encountered and will climb over/under a 6" tall, foot deep barrier, but atleast it will slow it down long enough to catch it before it gets really rooted on the other side.

can't do the knee thing like i used too. i tilled and tilled for months before planting my potatoes and now they are up 3 inches and so is alot of grass. i plant to mulch soon so maybe this will help. thanks for the effort in helping.

Janet,
Do you have some type of long handled cultivator (like the Claw) that would allow to to stand and work the soil? I know everyone doesn't do it the same, but I was taught to hill soil up the potato plant as it grows. If you are able to keep the soil cultivated, the grass shouldn't take hold and you can pull them out as you move the soil. If you don't hill around your potatoes, maybe you could lay down some landscape fabric or newspaper and put your mulch on top of that. I'm sorry I did not give you an answer before. I was not sure if you had some unwanted seedings or if you were trying to keep grass from spreading into your beds.

yes i do hill, usually twice then i mulch so hopefully this will get it under control. no need for an apology badseed.
