unhappy strawberry plants

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I have several strawberry plants I received in a trade. Since it's too cold to plant outdoors yet, I put them in a pot indoors. All of a sudden the leaves are drooping and have fallen off two of them. The soil is damp. Would it be worth a try to save them by planting outdoors in a protected spot? It's supposed to be 55 degrees tomorrow, but Thursday going down to 20, which is quite low for this time of year. Any suggstions?

are they getting evough light. are they planted too deep. i think i would plant oputside making sure the crown of the plant is above the soil line and mulch real good. pull the mulch back when it wams back up.

I'm no expert on strawberries, but I wouldn't recommend planting them just to turn around and dig them up to move them again. Instead, you might move them to an unheated spot, like a garage. Let them dry out a bit, and keep them on the dry side (not bone dry, just not real damp.)

Considering you're zone five, it'd be best if you can keep them in a semi-dormant stage for another month or so. To get them some sunlight, (and make it convenient to do that), you might put all the pots in a large shallow box (cut the sides off a big box if you need to), and move it outside when the days are above freezing, and back in at night until your nighttime temps stay above freezing.
