I have had Cattails plants for three years and not one cattail yet, can anyone explan what I am doing wrong?
I have given them plenty of water but I do fertilize, could that be where I am going wrong. If they don't produce this year they are history.
I really need help!
hope this helps Winds... http://www.floridata.com/ref/T/typh_lat.cfm
MaVie I thank you for the link but it still doesn't tell me how to make them bloom. I have them planted by the drain where they are always wet and still not a bloom. I had no idea that you could eat them, but rest asure they will be in a stir fry this year and if they don't bloom they will be in all of my summer dishes.
don't have any idea about that plant. i have never planted them. it has always been a practice of mine, to incorporate fertilizer in the growing medium prior to planting anything. that way, my plants are self sufficient all their own. i mean all plants or even seedling soil mixture. i never had any problems. and i do not pamper my plants, either. once i planted them. they are on their own. except the watering part. so far none of them dissappointed me yet!
Windsurfer, I have many cat-tails at the front part of my property, And they do great every year ~ The best I can tell you is that they are in 'very moist' soil ( The outer bank of the stream ) They get full sun, And I 'Have Never' fertilized them ~ I just leave them on there own as they are and they grow fine, At the end of summer I get many 'cat-tails'
Thanks Iris I think that the fertilizer is the problem, because God knows they get enough water.
I'd agree. Cut back on the fertilizer and see what happens.
windsurffer: Is it possible that they just don't bloom for some extended period of time after being moved or after growing from a seedling. I've started iris from seed, and they probably won't bloom for another couple years.
Weezie I bought the plant three years ago, this will be year number four. It has no problem spreading but just blooming.
Boy, I don't know...I keep expecting to see one of MaVieRose's lifesaving hyperlinks!
the question is... does the cattail get enough sunshine? sometimes location makes a difference too. like i said i have not grown them or even attempt to grow them. i am in the midst of desert, there are now water sources at least where i am located.
here is a site that goes thoroughly on the subject... http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/literatr/bulrush/physio.htm sorry i can not and will not always have an answer to the question posted. all i can do is try and find information available. did my best! hope someone can help out.
Could be planted too deep, not getting enough sun or it may be your fertilizer; producing all foliage and no blooms.
MaVie they are getting enough sunshine and water as well.
CoCo you might have a point but I am going to replant them this summer and stop feeding them and see what happens.
Winds... wish i know better. am sorry am of no help at all.
That's ok MaVie because if they don't bloom this year they are gone.
