If you could only pick one company from this list & you were trying to meet an array of gardening needs, who would you choose? Thanks in advance!
BFG Supply Co.
Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co.
Park Seed Company
Bluestone Perennials
The Water Garden
Caladium World
Cook's Garden, The
Dixondale Farms
Gilbert H. Wild & Son
Bloomingbulb.com
Pinetree Garden Seeds
Nestlebrae Gardens
Stokes Seed (U.S. & Canada)
If you had to pick just one...
Pinetree Garden seeds. I've bought all kinds of things from them and NEVER had a problem. This is not to say that many of the others aren't as good, but I look through all the catalogs and always end up doing the bulk of my seed etc. purchases from Pinetree.
None of the above. If I order from seed companies I usually order from Home Harvest.
"eyes"
The one that I would pick isn't on your list: Mellingers.
I couldn't pick one from that list. Most of them are speciality nurseries and don't offer "full service"
Mmmmmmm.... Okay, so what "full service" online sites do members prefer?
Pinetree.
Pinetree, I've ordered 3 times already and just love them
I would have to go with Bakers Creek. The only draw back would be flower seeds. They do not carry a large variety. Those I get as plants locally. But the reason I would go with them is simply they always sell a generous amount of seed for the price, the seeds are incredibly viable. (I am presently pulling up perfectly good seedlings, because as usual I over seeded) Ouch that hurts! : ) They also carry some wonderful hoes and other basic tools. Their assortment of books is also extensive. I like to stick with a company that always gives me quality, speedy processing of orders, and when this includes reasonable prices, I am one happy gardener!
I mostly order seeds, so Park Seed always has a wide variety of perennials to chose from, if you know what you are looking for. Cook's has a nice selection of specialty herbs and greens. This is my first year ordering from Stokes, and I was pleased with their selection. I ordered from approximately 13 online catalogs this year, but those three are the only ones on your list.
I'd be hard pressed to choose just one catalog for supplies, seeds, etc. However, I can see the importance of trying to order from one company, since the shipping costs can eat you alive when you shop around.
Great help & I appreciate it. I'm just a newbie and your ideas are all well noted. Gardener's Suppy Company has me on their mailing list & they have LOTS of fun (expensive) gardening toys. I didn't know if they had any good competition for their "fun" gardening toys. I think I've got a great idea on where to go for seeds & plants now.
Thanks all!
For all of you who contributed, it would be great if you could take a minute to "rate" your favorite (or not so favorite) companies at the Garden Watchdog http://gardenwatchdog.com/ which is also part of Dave's Garden
