Do you play 'Musical Chairs' with your plants?

Ladysmith, BC(Zone 8a)

I am one of those people who play 'musical chairs' with their plants. I am never satisfied with where my plants are located in the garden.

Today I spent 4 hours out in the garden re-arranging some of my perennials in the herbacious bed. Wanted to finish it tomorrow but they say rain is in the forecast, so will have to leave the poor plants alone till it is another sunny day.

I just love re-arranging the whole garden, my neighbours think I am totally MAD, but that is how I get my enjoyment, trying out different combinations.

I have moved a lot of plants too. But most of the moves I made were to correct mistakes...ie..too much sun, not enough sun, too tall, too short, to large for the location.
You name it and if it is wrong I have probably done it. In fact I finally got the message and decided to think and research before I plant! I look forward to moving things for fun and not as a correction!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that makes planting mistakes! I play musical plants all the time......(have learned the hard way to leave roses alone though!!!). My main problem is not researching and finding out how invasive something can be (like chocolate mint, yarrow, trollius, plains coreopsis, to name a few!), and then having to move them to protect the more "important" plants.

But the older (and sorer/stiffer) I get, the more I learn to find out FIRST, plant ONCE and enjoy MORE! :-)

My husband always makes fun of me because I am always moving my plants. I tell him that I am saving him money by recycling them instead of just buying more. I have so many new perennials coming this year that I think I will be busy this year just planting them. Next year I get to move them around! Thinking of keeping some plants in containers and burying them in the ground so it just makes it easier on my back!

Janice -- tell your husband (like I do mine) that he ought to be grateful you're not asking him to help, let alone, move furniture! :-) That's what I tell mine when he starts pickin' on me!

Momcat- thats a good one!! I will use that one. Shoulda seen him when he had to dig up 6 hedge and my wheeping cherry tree when I cut down the ugly pine tree!
I think he would relocate bugs to kill my flowers before he would start relocating my plants!!!

I do that a lot too....Although, I have always been a firm believer to just leave plants alone once they're in, like a lot of us, I have planted in inappropriate spots etc.
I didnt realise yarrow was invasive, I just might have to move mine, I got a couple of them last year. As a rule of thumb, what plants should we not play musical chairs with? meaning they will not bloom that season if they are moved? or is it early enough in the season that if we move them now, they will bloom. I also think moving them now while it is still early in the season, cool, and plenty of rain shouldnt hurt them.

Some of the mistakes of "moving" that I've made have been with roses (they have to be dormant!!!), (same with trees), and with poppies.....they hate to be transplanted. I had heard that sweet peas didn't like to be moved either, but I moved mine from starting pots into larger pots, then into the ground and they all did ok. I guess it depends on whether you disturb their roots (I didn't).

Most perennials seem to do ok if you move them in the fall (late).......annuals, it depends. I know that some plants like snaps, zinnias, cosmos, etc., don't seem to mind being moved once. (I always have some 'strays' coming up where they don't belong).

Does anyone else have any others I should know about?
